Business Rates Officer

(Temporary - PAYE)

Rate: 14.82/hour

Contract: Until end of December (possible extension)

Location: Totnes / Tavistock / Agile Working

Role Overview

Support the Revenues and Recovery Team in managing and safeguarding the Business Rates base. Responsibilities include establishing liability, billing, collection, enforcement, and providing expert advice to customers.

Key Responsibilities

* Maintain accurate Business Rates and Valuation records.

* Assess liability and apply appropriate reliefs/exemptions.

* Handle billing, recovery, and customer enquiries across multiple channels.

* Liaise with the Valuation Office Agency and internal/external stakeholders.

* Administer empty property processes and refer inspections.

* Promote direct debit payments and attend court hearings as needed.

* Maximise revenue through proactive account management and enforcement.

* Investigate potential fraud and support service improvement projects.

Person Specification

Qualifications:

* Minimum 5 GCSEs including Maths and English or equivalent experience.

Experience:

* Background in Revenues or similar environment.

* Familiarity with business rates legislation and enforcement.

* Experience with Revenues and Benefits software and document management systems.

* Skilled in customer service, especially in challenging situations.

Skills:

* Strong verbal and written communication.

* Ability to interpret complex legislation.

* High attention to detail and accuracy.

* Proficient in Microsoft Office and specialist systems.

* Flexible, proactive, and able to work independently or as part of a team.

Other Requirements:

* Understanding of Equal Opportunities, Customer Care, and Health & Safety policies.

* DBS check required.
