Job Title: Geotechnical Engineer

Location: Nationwide site visits

Salary: Dependant on experience

Hours: Full time – Monday – Friday 9:00-17:00 (midweek and weekend overtime available)

About the role

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Geotechnical Engineer to join our team within the rail industry. To support ground investigation projects through accurate on-site soil and rock logging in accordance with BS5930 and other relevant standards, and to produce high-quality factual reports for use in geotechnical and environmental assessments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct site-based logging of soil and rock samples in line with BS5930, Eurocode 7, and project-specific requirements.
  • Supervise drilling, trial pitting, and in-situ testing (SPT, CPT, etc.) operations on a variety of sites (brownfield, greenfield, infrastructure, etc.).
  • Liaise with drilling crews and site personnel to ensure smooth running of field activities.
  • Collect, label, and manage samples for laboratory testing in accordance with QA/QC protocols.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate field records, including borehole logs, groundwater observations, and photographic records.
  • Prepare clear and concise factual reports including borehole logs, test schedules, and site observations.
  • Communicate findings and progress to project managers and senior engineers.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in line with health, safety, and environmental standards.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • BSc or MSc in Geology, Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with soil and rock description and logging.
  • Familiarity with BS5930, BS EN ISO 14688/14689, and Eurocode 7.
  • Good understanding of ground investigation techniques and procedures.
  • Proficient in using logging software such as HoleBASE, AGS data formats, or similar.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel/stay away for fieldwork.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently on site.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical findings clearly and concisely.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen interest in geotechnical engineering challenges and solutions.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with colleagues across various disciplines, including engineers, contractors, and clients.
  • A keen eye for detail and accuracy when collecting and interpreting data, writing reports, and supporting design efforts.
  • Eagerness to learn, develop, and grow professionally in the field of geotechnical engineering, with a particular focus on rail infrastructure projects.
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations and an understanding of how they apply to site-based activities.

Desirable Skills:

  • CSCS card or equivalent H&S qualification.
  • CAT and Genny training, First Aid, SMSTS or SSSTS certification.
  • Prior experience in preparing AGS-compliant logs.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory testing processes and scheduling.
