Join our team as a Mechanic Vehicle & Plant Craft Person and play a crucial role in maintaining and repairing a diverse range of vehicles and plant equipment. This position is integral to ensuring roadworthiness, safety, and compliance with legal standards, supporting fleet decarbonisation, and contributing to the Council’s Climate Change Action Plan.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair vehicles, plant, and equipment to statutory and internal standards.
  • Diagnose faults using both manual and computer-based systems.
  • Conduct MOT and taxi tests, roadworthiness checks, and provide breakdown recovery services.
  • Operate a variety of diagnostic and testing equipment.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records.
  • Perform welding and fabrication of parts as needed.
  • Drive and operate a range of vehicles and plant.
  • Mentor apprentices and support less experienced staff.
  • Ensure adherence to health and safety procedures and proper use of PPE.
  • Participate in shift work and provide out-of-hours cover as required.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Level 1:
    • NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in motor vehicle engineering.
    • Awareness of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles (NVQ 2).
    • Manual handling training.
    • Category B driving licence.
  • Level 2:
    • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent.
    • Maintenance of Electric/Hybrid Vehicles (NVQ 3 or working towards).
    • Category C LGV licence.
  • Desirable for All Levels:
    • MOT tester, forklift, crane, abrasive wheel, chainsaw licences.
    • NVQ 4 or BTEC in relevant disciplines.

Skills & Experience:

  • Level 1:
    • Basic diagnostics and repair of vehicles and horticultural machinery.
    • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and workshop equipment.
    • Understanding of COSHH, HAVS, and environmental controls.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Level 2:
    • Advanced diagnostics including CanBus and high-voltage systems.
    • Experience in maintaining a diverse fleet and performing recovery operations.
    • Fabrication and welding skills.
    • Strong understanding of DVSA, LOLER, PUWER regulations.

Working Conditions:

  • 37 hours per week with shift rotation (1 in 4 weeks on afternoons).
  • Work involves heavy lifting, outdoor tasks in all weather, working in confined spaces, and dirty environments.
  • Use of PPE is mandatory.
