Duration: 12 months

Clearance: Must be eligible for SC clearance

About the Project

This role is part of the UK Tails Management Facility (TMF) programme, a major project supporting the safe processing of depleted uranium hexafluoride. As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will play a key role in delivering engineering scope across complex equipment such as gloveboxes, pumps, filters, sampling cabinets, lifts, cranes, and hoists-ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient solutions for this critical facility.

The Role

You will manage the delivery of mechanical engineering and technical activities, from producing specifications and datasheets through to risk assessments, design reviews, and technical reports. Acting as a subject matter expert, you'll apply engineering standards, codes, and regulations while supporting project safety assessments and mentoring less experienced engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and review of specifications, datasheets, calculations, and technical deliverables for mechanical equipment.
  • Carry out and review Designer Risk Assessments (DRAs) across PUWER, PED, and work environments.
  • Ensure adherence to safety cases, regulations, codes, and standards throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and support to junior team members.
  • Interface with multidisciplinary engineering teams and engage directly with stakeholders.
  • Support project planning, risk management, and the resolution of technical challenges.
  • Act as Technical Authority or Engineering Lead when authorised.

Requirements (Essential):

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards it).
  • Significant experience in specification, design, and risk assessment of mechanical equipment such as pumps, filters, gloveboxes, cranes, and hoists.
  • Demonstrable experience working collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams on complex engineering projects.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, design codes, and safety standards.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills.

Desirable:

  • Member of a relevant professional institute or eligible for registration with the Engineering Council.
  • Experience delivering engineering scope from concept through to Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC).
  • Background across both commercial and defence-related engineering projects.
  • Experience with fabricated structures, welding, or plant assembly equipment.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a high-profile nuclear infrastructure project of national importance, working within a collaborative and technically challenging environment.
