Senior Mechanical Engineer (SRP Project, Sellafield)

51-55/hour Inside IR35
We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Sellafield Product & Residue Store (SPRS) Retreatment Plant (SRP) Project - a nationally significant facility that will safely manage and secure Special Nuclear Material (SNM) into the next century.
This role is critical in supporting the delivery of Design Justification Reports (DJRs) and overseeing design activities through the project's execution phase.
About the Project
The SRP project will provide a facility that:
- Safely receives SNM packages from existing storage locations.
- Retreats and repackages these into new 100-year storage packages.
- Transfers them to the SPRS facility for secure storage until 2120.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the UK's most important nuclear safety projects, ensuring materials remain safe and secure for generations.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate engineering and design activities.
- Develop engineering solutions for complex projects, from concept through to manufacture.
- Support manufacturing and testing queries, design changes, and configuration management.
- Produce and review technical reports, specifications, and calculations.
- Present engineering solutions to stakeholders and at design reviews.
- Deliver scope of work to agreed timescales and budgets.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong background in mechanical engineering design for plant and equipment.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD systems (e.g. Inventor, SolidWorks, ProE) and CAD management tools.
- Familiarity with 2D drawing standards (BS 8888).
- Experience leading designers in the production of drawings and documentation.
- Knowledge of plant layout, installation, alignment, and testing of equipment.
- Experience writing and checking works test documentation, integrated test documents, and O&M manuals.
- Ability to support manufacturing, inspection, and test queries.
- Office-based availability (typically blended 3/2 Office/WFH).
Desirable Skills
- Experience in authoring/checking Design Justification Reports (DJRs).
- Knowledge of safety cases and Sellafield engineering standards.
- Experience designing for nuclear environments and glovebox systems.
- Understanding of CDM, SoMSR, PUWER & LOLER.
- Willingness to travel occasionally outside the UK to support manufacturing and testing.
