Job Opportunity: Private Sector Housing Technician / Environmental Health Technical Officer

Hourly Rate: £17.85 – £21.38 (Technician) | £21.77 – £23.37 (EHO)

Duration: 12 weeks

Hours: 37 per week (full time)

Location: Hybrid – 3 days per week in the office (training period office-based) Welwyn Hatfield

We are seeking either a Private Sector Housing Technician or an Environmental Health Officer to join our Public Realm Team on a temporary basis. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in housing standards while developing your expertise within a supportive team environment. You will be part of a busy Private Sector Housing Team, investigating complaints, inspecting sites, licensing HMOs, and supporting colleagues in delivering key housing services.

Responsibilities include:

  • Carrying out HHSRS inspections and enforcement.
  • Undertaking HMO licensing inspections to ensure compliance with housing standards.
  • Assessing empty properties and working with owners to bring them back into use.
  • Supporting landlord accreditation and ensuring student accommodation meets standards.
  • Assisting with grant delivery (desirable but not essential).

Enforcing legislation, including:

  • Housing Act 2004
  • HMO Management Regulations
  • Housing & Planning Act 2016
  • Environmental Protection Act 1990
  • Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014
  • Building Act 1984

Requirements

  • Proven experience in housing enforcement or environmental health.
  • Ability to manage a varied workload in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant housing and environmental legislation.
  • Current driving licence and access to a vehicle with relevant insurance.
  • Flexibility to undertake monitoring visits outside of standard working hours.
