Job Opportunity: Private Sector Housing Technician / Environmental Health Technical Officer
Hourly Rate: £17.85 – £21.38 (Technician) | £21.77 – £23.37 (EHO)
Duration: 12 weeks
Hours: 37 per week (full time)
Location: Hybrid – 3 days per week in the office (training period office-based) Welwyn Hatfield
We are seeking either a Private Sector Housing Technician or an Environmental Health Officer to join our Public Realm Team on a temporary basis. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in housing standards while developing your expertise within a supportive team environment. You will be part of a busy Private Sector Housing Team, investigating complaints, inspecting sites, licensing HMOs, and supporting colleagues in delivering key housing services.
Responsibilities include:
- Carrying out HHSRS inspections and enforcement.
- Undertaking HMO licensing inspections to ensure compliance with housing standards.
- Assessing empty properties and working with owners to bring them back into use.
- Supporting landlord accreditation and ensuring student accommodation meets standards.
- Assisting with grant delivery (desirable but not essential).
Enforcing legislation, including:
- Housing Act 2004
- HMO Management Regulations
- Housing & Planning Act 2016
- Environmental Protection Act 1990
- Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014
- Building Act 1984
Requirements
- Proven experience in housing enforcement or environmental health.
- Ability to manage a varied workload in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong knowledge of relevant housing and environmental legislation.
- Current driving licence and access to a vehicle with relevant insurance.
- Flexibility to undertake monitoring visits outside of standard working hours.
