Job Title: School Caretaker

Job Summary:The School Caretaker is responsible for ensuring the school site is clean, secure, safe, and well-maintained. This role supports the smooth day-to-day running of the school by performing general maintenance, security duties, and site supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Open and close the school premises at designated times, ensuring all access points are secure.

  • Carry out minor repairs and general maintenance of the buildings and grounds (e.g., plumbing, painting, furniture repairs).

  • Monitor heating, lighting, and alarm systems, reporting issues or arranging specialist repairs when needed.

  • Ensure health and safety compliance across the site; identify hazards and take corrective action.

  • Maintain cleanliness and order in outdoor areas including playgrounds, pathways, and car parks.

  • Supervise cleaning contractors and site staff; ensure standards of hygiene and cleanliness are upheld.

  • Manage deliveries and distribute supplies appropriately across the school.

  • Assist in the setup of furniture and equipment for school events or lettings.

  • Respond to urgent maintenance issues and emergencies efficiently and professionally.

  • Keep records of maintenance tasks, inspections, and site safety checks.

Key Skills and Attributes:

  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, and general building repairs.

  • Good understanding of health and safety procedures and site security.

  • Ability to work independently and use initiative.

  • Reliable, punctual, and proactive with good communication skills.

  • Flexible and willing to respond to out-of-hours emergencies when required.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Previous experience in a similar role preferred.

  • Basic handyman or building maintenance skills.

  • Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to undergo one).

  • Physically fit and capable of manual handling duties.
