Engineering Manager

Employment type: Permanent, full-time
Location: Widnes
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: 70,000 - 80,000 + Performance Bonus + Benefits (25 days holiday + bank holidays, 5% matched pension)

Our client is a well-established manufacturer operating within a fast-paced, regulated environment. Based at a busy production site in Widnes, they are seeking a highly experienced Engineering Manager to lead the engineering and maintenance function. This is a key leadership position within the site management team, reporting directly to the Site Operations Manager and playing a vital role in driving operational efficiency and shaping long-term asset strategy.

The Role

The Engineering Manager will be responsible for shaping and delivering the site's engineering strategy, with a strong focus on asset reliability, maintenance efficiency, and compliance. Leading a skilled engineering team, this individual will play a central role in driving continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring high standards in safety and quality, and managing CAPEX and OPEX budgets. A key focus will be the development and implementation of a robust preventative maintenance strategy and ensuring the site is future-ready. This is a hands-on leadership position requiring strong stakeholder management, strategic thinking, and a proactive, solutions-driven approach.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and deliver an effective engineering and facilities maintenance strategy aligned with site objectives.
  • Drive and uphold the highest standards of health, safety, environmental, and quality compliance.
  • Lead and manage the engineering team to meet both day-to-day and long-term maintenance and CAPEX goals.
  • Ensure asset availability through a robust preventative maintenance program and condition monitoring.
  • Apply and review FMEA principles to optimise maintenance efforts across all plant areas.
  • Oversee minor and maintenance projects, ensuring delivery against scope, budget, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Deliver and control engineering budgets, manage cost variances, and support the long-range planning process.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement and Lean methodologies across engineering operations.
  • Collaborate with senior management to shape team structure, succession planning, and training programmes.
  • Mentor and develop engineering staff, fostering a high-performance culture.

Required Skills/Experience:
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience in senior engineering management within a fast-paced, manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated success managing change/transformation projects.
  • Expertise in Lean and continuous improvement methodologies (e.g. Six Sigma, Kaizen).
  • Strong understanding of maintenance strategy development.
  • Experience with condition monitoring and predictive maintenance.
  • Deep knowledge of Health & Safety systems and compliance.
  • Strong financial acumen in managing OPEX and CAPEX budgets.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a natural ability to lead and influence.
  • Proficient in MS Office, with a clear focus on digital tools and data-driven decision making.
