  Summary

Reporting to the Fuel Team Leader, the Fuel Handling Technician is responsible for managing all aspects of fuel operations — from reception through to by-product removal — ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable plant performance.

The role requires strict adherence to safety, environmental, and industry best practice standards while maintaining maximum plant availability and efficiency. The Technician will also support scheduling and coordination of fuel deliveries, by-product collections, and general site logistics.

Flexibility is essential, as working patterns may need to adjust to meet operational requirements. Occasional travel within the UK may be required.

  • Contracted service providers and suppliers

  • Shift and Operations Teams

  • Engineering and Maintenance Teams

  • QHSE and Site Management

Responsibilities
  • Operate fuel handling and by-product systems safely and efficiently, maintaining compliance with all operational limits.

  • Conduct daily inspections, vehicle checks, and routine maintenance of plant and equipment.

  • Oversee loading and unloading of fuel, by-products, and site deliveries.

  • Monitor incoming fuel quality and complete periodic stock audits.

  • Support maintenance teams with first-line fault finding, planned work, and defect resolution.

  • Record all fuel-handling activities, inspections, and maintenance tasks within the site’s CMMS system.

  • Assist with plant outages, shutdowns, and day-working activities when required.

  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental policies and contribute to the ongoing improvement of site procedures.

  • Ensure full compliance with company policies, operational standards, and relevant legislation.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Education & Training

  • ONC, City & Guilds, or NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant technical discipline.

  • Strong practical experience in operations and maintenance.

  • IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent) preferred.

Technical & Operational Experience

  • Skilled in operating Counterbalance FLT, Front Loader, Telescopic Handler, and Overhead Grab Crane.

  • Experience within biomass, thermal power generation, or other heavy process industries desirable.

  • Familiar with traffic management and weighbridge systems.

  • Good understanding of HSE principles and procedures.

Skills & Attributes

  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and reliable with a hands-on approach.

  • Works well independently and as part of a team.

  • Full UK driving licence required.
