Payroll & Bookkeeping Assistant

Location: York (City Centre) - Hybrid working (2 days from home)
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm with an hour for lunch (35 hour week)
Benefits: 25 days holiday plus bank holidays, overtime pay, well-established and supportive team.

We are partnering with a well-established accountancy practice to recruit a Payroll & Bookkeeping Administrator. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with experience in practice who enjoys a varied role covering both payroll and bookkeeping.

Due to the office location, we are particularly looking for candidates who are local to York city centre or within a reasonable commute.

  Key Responsibilities

  • Process weekly and monthly payrolls accurately.

  • Input hours, overtime, bonuses, and deductions.

  • Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements including tax and NI.

  • Maintain payroll records and produce reports as required.

  • Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies promptly.

  • Keep up to date with changes in payroll legislation.

  • Reconcile bank accounts and client ledgers.

  • Process invoices and transactions accurately.

  • Submit VAT returns.

  • Assist with general bookkeeping duties across a varied client portfolio.

  About You

  • Experience working in an accountancy practice is essential.

  • Strong knowledge of UK payroll procedures and compliance.

  • Confident using accountancy software such as Xero.

  • Excellent organisation and high attention to detail.

  • Able to handle sensitive information professionally and confidentially.
