JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Penn State AbingtonĀ seeksĀ engagingĀ and dynamic candidate to fillĀ a newlyĀ created opening ofĀ ProfessionalĀ PhysicsĀ Tutor. This role will workĀ in the Chaiken Center forĀ Student SuccessĀ toĀ provideĀ tutoringĀ inĀ PhysicsĀ Ā toĀ undergraduate universityĀ students.Ā TheĀ tutorĀ will also develop workshops, structured academic initiatives, as well as other collaborative opportunities that engage faculty, student organizations, and other members of the campus community. The Professional Tutor will interact with faculty and staff to promote the services of the Chaiken CenterĀ and to ensure that tutoring services align with the courseĀ objectives. The Professional Tutor willĀ be responsible forĀ maintainingĀ a record for each student tutored, e.g.,Ā Starfish Outcome Notes,Ā ClientĀ ReportĀ Forms,Ā Satisfaction Surveys, etc.Ā Ā 

Job Duties

  • ProvidesĀ individualĀ PhysicsĀ tutoring for students.

  • AssignsĀ practice exercises as needed.Ā 

  • MentorsĀ students in completion and review of class assignments.Ā 

  • AssistsĀ students in preparing for exams.Ā 

  • AssistsĀ students in developing greater self-directed learning strategies.Ā 

  • CreatesĀ andĀ maintainsĀ aĀ Physics-focusedĀ Canvas course shellĀ which will serve as a repository ofĀ PhysicsĀ resources tutors can use as they work withĀ theirĀ studentsĀ 

  • MonitorsĀ scheduling &Ā documentation through Starfish.

  • MaintainsĀ detailed records: Starfish Outcome Notes, Client Report Forms, Satisfaction Surveys, and other assessment measures.

  • CreatesĀ and compilesĀ Physics-focusedĀ instructional and marketingĀ materials.

  • DevelopsĀ and deliversĀ workshops, presentations, and online resources for students on a range ofĀ PhysicsĀ topics.

  • ProvidesĀ administrative support forĀ theĀ ChaikenĀ Center for StudentĀ Success.

  • ServesĀ as a liaison to academic departments and related services.

  • PerformsĀ intentionalĀ outreach and interact directly withĀ under-served andĀ under-resourcedĀ students.

  • Leads/coordinatesĀ special projects or initiatives as assigned.

  • Collaborates with professors to ensure that tutoring complements classroom instruction.Ā

Requirements and Qualifications

Successful candidates willĀ possess:Ā 

  • AĀ Master'sĀ degree (preferred) inĀ PhysicsĀ or a related discipline,Ā 3+ years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Understanding of and familiarity with effective assessment practices focusing on academic support services.

  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills.

  • Innovation and creativity in program development.

  • Proven presentation, group facilitation, and teaching skills.

  • Extensive ability to collaborate and develop relationships with a wide range of constituents.

  • Ability to work with a diverse student population.

  • Outstanding teamwork abilities.

  • Ability to workĀ late afternoon/early evening and, on occasion,Ā weekend hours.

Compensation: The starting rate for this job is $25/hour.
