POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is located on the Spokane Indian Reservation within the Fire and Fuels Management organizations.  This is an entry level wildland firefighting position. Fire Fighter 2 functions as a member of a hand crew, engine crew, or fuels crew performing wildland fire preparedness, suppression, and fuels management duties in adverse climate, fuel, and terrain conditions.  This is an arduous position and subject to medical screening and physical fitness testing.





MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Major duties will be serving as a member of a fire crew assigned to suppress the full range of wildland fires. Under the supervision from supervisors or higher qualified employees, perform assignments at the trainee firefighter level to develop a working knowledge of wildland fire and fuels management techniques and practices.  This consists of Fireline construction, use of pumps and engines, hose lays using appropriate nozzles and nozzle adjustments in the effective use of water and additives, working in and around aircraft such as helicopters, and understanding safety rules, basic fire behavior and fire and fuels terminology, participates in fire and safety training techniques through classroom and on the job experience with crew proficiency checks and drills using safety sessions and fire critiques. In addition, practices methods of fire suppression in a safe efficient operation with the use of hand tools, equipment and vehicles used in Fireline activities.   
  • Ensures own and others welfare and safety in all aspects of assignments.
  • Working knowledge of basic fire behavior, hazards and accepted fire safety practices and procedures to prevent injury and loss of life.
  • Ability to perform duties under stressful and adverse operating conditions, such as long work hours, heavy workloads, emergency situations, adverse working and environmental conditions.
  • Basic knowledge of agency and interagency qualification, position task book requirements and certification standards and procedures adopted by the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG).





MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license and be Tribally Insurable.
  • Must maintain qualifications for FFT2.
