The Aiken Standard seeks a qualified and motivated Sports Reporter to produce comprehensive coverage of local and regional sports for print, digital, and social media platforms. The individual in this position will create written, photographic, and video content that aligns with the organizations editorial standards and enhances audience engagement across multiple channels.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, report, and write timely and accurate sports news and feature articles for print and digital publication.
  • Cover a wide range of athletic events, including high school, collegiate, and community sports.
  • Produce multimedia content, including short videos, highlight reels, and interviews for digital and social media platforms.
  • Publish and promote sports stories using AikenStandard.com and official social media accounts to increase online engagement and readership.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with coaches, athletes, and local sports organizations.
  • Collaborate with editors, photographers, and other newsroom staff to plan and execute sports coverage.
  • Ensure all content meets journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, clarity, and ethical reporting.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by sports schedules and event coverage needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in reporting, preferably in sports journalism.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with AP style and editorial best practices.
  • Familiarity with video production and editing software preferred.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms and content management systems.
  • Ability to work under deadline pressure and manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
