A caregiver in this Lead Pharmacist – Inpatient role supports pharmacy operations at Akron General, providing leadership while overseeing medication preparation, distribution, and clinical pharmacy services across multiple inpatient service lines. This caregiver collaborates closely with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nursing staff, and other clinical caregivers while supporting activities such as patient chart review, order verification, sterile and non-sterile compounding checks, and triaging patient care needs. In addition to operational responsibilities, the Lead Pharmacist helps coordinate pharmacist and technician workflows, manages technician scheduling, and supports quality improvement efforts and departmental or enterprise initiatives within a collaborative, team-oriented hospital environment.
A caregiver in this position primarily works 2nd shift with scheduled hours of 2:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. or 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. for operational coverage. This role also includes one project day per week, which may occur on either 1st or 2nd shift. There are no weekend or holiday requirements, and the caregiver participates in an administrative on-call rotation approximately every tenth week with the leadership team.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Lead and coordinate work activities for assigned practice areas and provide feedback to caregivers regarding performance under the direction of the manager.
- Train and mentor caregivers and residents and precept students.
- Participate in interviewing and recommend selection of candidates.
- Triage issues to management and follow-up.
- Participate in operational tasks such as workflow oversight, process decision making, project implementation, and drug shortage management.
- Ensure and maintain quality control in regard to patient care and medication and equipment usage.
- Review and assess medication orders to identify, prevent, and resolve potential and actual drug related problems.
- Advise prescriber of medication related issues and recommend formulary alternatives when appropriate.
- Review, interpret, clarify, enter, and verify patient's information and medication orders for processing.
- Assist with health-system level decision-making related to practice area, committee work, and decision making for relevant policies.
- Provide drug information support for pertinent drug information questions.
- Provide management support and demonstrate leadership for assigned practice area.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- PharmD or Bachelor’s of Science in pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy
- Current state licensure as a Registered Pharmacist (RPh) or eligible for reciprocation within 90 days of hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross and completion of a Board of Pharmacy approved course in the administration of immunizations or certification within 90 days of hire if administering immunizations
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certifications through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within one year of hire if responding to adult or pediatric cardiopulmonary arrest events
- Completion of a Health-system Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) PGY2 Residency OR completion of either a Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY-1) or Post-Graduate Rear 2 Residency (PGY2) and one year of relevant pharmacy experience OR three years relevant pharmacy experience
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Previous leadership experience
- Prior inpatient experience
Physical Requirements:
- Typical physical demands include ability to perform functions of the job while reaching and stretching, and manual dexterity sufficient to perform computer functions of job.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required for procedures.
