PRN Radiation Therapy Technologist

Radiation Therapy Technologists implement plans of treatment, prescribed by an oncologist and created by a medical dosimetrist, and use accelerators and ionizing-radiation producing equipment to treat diseases, primarily different kinds of cancer. The radiation is administered in therapeutic doses and can send certain localized forms of cancer into remission. It can also be used to prevent the recurrence of particularly malignant forms of cancer after they have been removed during surgery. 
 

A caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 7:30AM – 7:00PM.  

This role is a Monday thru Friday possibility, but completely flexible on what a caregiver is willing to pick up.  Do not need to cover early shift (7am) and they are NOT required to take call. They are typically 4-8 hours shifts!


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide proper radiation treatments to cancer patients and keep accurate records of the treatments. 

  • Administer prescribed doses of radiation to specific body parts, using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and procedures.  

  • Follow radiation safety protocols for patients, self and others. 

  • Educate, prepare, and reassure patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance, and reinforcing physician advice regardingtreatment reactions and post-treatment care. 

  • Assist physicians with performing brachytherapy procedures as needed. 

  • Schedule patients for treatments and simulations. 

  • Conduct quality assurance tests on equipment to ensure it is functioning properly and report potential problems. 

  • Assist radiation oncologists and physicists to prepare physical and technical aspects of treatment plan simulations. 

  • Calculate initial treatment dosages to determineproper radiation treatments, when necessary. 

  • Comply with all Radiation Oncology System (IMPAC) entry requirements for accurate patient treatment, charges, and tracking monitors as appropriate.  

  • Maintain accurate records. 

  • Stay current in new technology by reviewing literature and attending relevant seminars. 

  • Assist and support the therapy student and radiologic student program, specifically the clinical aspect.  

  • Provide supervision and feedback to students as they perform procedures. 

  • Review images with students on request and provide evaluations of students to clinical instructor for formal reviews. 

  • Completes mandatory education and training in order to maintain competencies, requirements, certification and/or licensure.  


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Graduate from a School of Radiation Therapy Technology that is approved by the Joint Review Committee on Education of Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) and registry eligible.  

  • Radiation Therapist license in the State of Ohio.  

  • Radiation Therapy (T) - ARRT.  

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.  

  • Ability to operate radiation equipment properly and safely.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires ability to perform duties while walking, standing, stooping, reaching and lifting.
  • Requires ability to lift materials weighing up to 35 lbs.
  • Requires ability to push/pull over 100 lbs to assist patients.
  • Requires dexterity sufficient to perform computer functions.
  • Requires Safe Operating Procedure for x-ray generating equipment.
  • Requires ability to work the hours of operation – flexible.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
