The Hemodialysis Technician is responsible for direct patient care. Direct patient care includes performance of basic hemodialysis techniques and procedures, daily patient care and observations under the direct supervision and guidance of a registered nurse. This position is responsible for minimal water room testing. The Hemodialysis Technician will draw blood samples and prepare them for transport to the laboratory. This position is also responsible for performing both simple and complex laboratory tests as well as the required quality controls. The Hemodialysis Technician participates in quality improvement activities to maintain patient care standards. The technician reports directly to the Charge Nurse or Nurse Manager as appropriate.Description:
GENERAL REQUIREMENTSÂ
Receives patient into the treatment area and performs patient data collection and documents appropriately in the EMRÂ
Monitors and documents the status of vascular accesses using proper cannulation techniques in accordance with hospital vascular access procedure Â
Documents patient observations and seeks guidance when abnormalities are noted in patient’s parametersÂ
Monitors and documents in EMR: patient’s vital signs, fluid therapy administration, and any other appropriate treatments performed. Â
Observe hospital policy and procedures for infection control and safetyÂ
Obtain blood samples per policy and procedure and appropriately send them to the laboratoryÂ
Sets up and monitors dialysis machines and reverse osmosis water system for correct functioning, responds to visual and audible alarms, and makesappropriate adjustments before, during, and after the dialysis treatmentÂ
Perform safety checks as directed by the registered nurse prior to, during, and following treatmentsÂ
Reviews dialysis prescription and notes the physical and mental condition of the patient through observation and interview. Document observations appropriately in the EMRÂ
Dismantles, cleans, and disinfects dialysis machines and other equipment according to hospital infection control policies and proceduresÂ
Obtains and sends water and machine cultures to designated labÂ
Notifies Biomedical Technician of any equipment malfunctionsÂ
Act as a role model and coach for other teammatesÂ
Performs clerical duties as needed which may include filing, answering phones, ordering supplies, copying, and faxingÂ
Attends hospital orientation and mandatory in-services as required Â
Consistent, regular, and punctual attendance as scheduledÂ

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSÂ
Minimum of one (1) year working as an acute care PCT, CNA, or CMA, or one (1) year working as an acute care dialysis technicianÂ

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSURESÂ
Dialysis Technician Certification (CCHT) by a CMS approved state certification program or national certification program (Preferred)Â
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), or Phlebotomy certification (Preferred)Â
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire (Required)Â
