Job Summary

The Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems across agricultural facilities including feedlots, swine operations, employee housing, grain systems, and construction projects. This role ensures safe, reliable electrical service to support employee welfare, animal care, facility operations, and equipment performance.

 

Key Responsibilities

Safety

  • Follow all OSHA, NEC, and company safety standards
  • Comply with biosecurity protocols in livestock facilities
  • Lockout/Tagout procedures when servicing electrical systems
  • Maintain safe wiring practices to prevent fire hazards in dusty and high-moisture environments
  • Use proper PPE (arc-flash gear, respirators, fall protection, etc.)
  • Identify and correct electrical hazards proactively
  • Ensure backup power systems are operational to protect animal welfare
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas

Quality

  • Install electrical systems according to code, blueprints, and specifications
  • Ensure proper operation of ventilation, heating, feeding, watering, and manure systems
  • Perform thorough troubleshooting and permanent repairs — not temporary fixes
  • Test systems after installation or repair to confirm reliability
  • Maintain accurate documentation of repairs, inspections, and upgrades
  • Support high animal care standards by maintaining consistent environmental controls

 

Efficiency

  • Diagnose electrical issues quickly to minimize downtime
  • Prioritize repairs affecting animal welfare or production
  • Perform preventative maintenance to reduce emergency breakdowns
  • Manage materials and inventory to avoid project delays
  • Complete projects on schedule and within budget
  • Improve systems, when possible, to increase energy efficiency and reliability

Teamwork & Collaboration

  • Communicate clearly with managers, barn staff, and construction crews
  • Coordinate with production teams to schedule repairs with minimal disruption
  • Assist other maintenance or construction team members when needed
  • Share knowledge and help train less-experienced employees
  • Maintain a professional attitude in fast-paced and high-pressure situations

Attendance & Reliability

  • Maintain consistent and dependable attendance
  • Be available for emergency or after-hours service calls as required
  • Arrive prepared and on time for scheduled shifts and projects
  • Follow assigned schedules and complete tasks as directed
  • Demonstrate accountability and ownership of assigned responsibilities

Qualifications

  • Journeyman or Master Electrician license preferred (or equivalent experience)
  • 3+ years of electrical experience (agricultural or industrial preferred)
  • Knowledge of single-phase and three-phase electrical systems
  • Experience with motor controls, automation systems, and agricultural equipment preferred
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and livestock environments
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Valid driver’s license

Work Environment

  • Exposure to dust, moisture, extreme temperatures, and livestock environments
  • Work at heights and in confined spaces
  • On-call availability for emergency repairs
  • Occasional travel between facilities

 

Physical Requirements

  • Lift up to 75 lbs
  • Climb ladders and work on elevated platforms
  • Stand, kneel, bend, and crawl for extended periods

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in swine or feedlot production environments
  • Familiarity with ventilation controllers and environmental control systems
  • Basic welding and fabrication skills
  • Understanding of backup power systems and generators
