Position Summary: 

The Director of Development provides direction and oversight in all functions that contribute to and support the raising of financial resources, which support and fund the advancement of Heading Home’s mission. 

Strategic Overview: 

The Development Department is designed to build relationships towards a philanthropic outcome by growing systems that raise money and will place most of its time and resource requests for philanthropic investment by individuals, families, corporations, and foundations whose mission of philanthropy overlaps with the work and mission of Heading Home. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning: Develop and implement a comprehensive written annual resource development plan with strategies for donors and prospects. Development planning and work will engage staff, board members, civic leaders, and philanthropists in raising money, awareness, and volunteers. Lead board development committee. 
  • Major and Planned Giving: Manage, and maintain a donor engagement database, communications, and donor recognition plans that inspire major and planned-gift prospects to deepen engagement. Build and maintain relationships with major donors of all types to grow giving and involvement. Develop and implement a Capital Campaign and Annual Giving Campaign. 
  • Grant Requests and Administration: Research and write grants to diversify Heading Home’s funding portfolio. Provide timely reporting and ensure compliance as required by grant award documentation. 
  • Marketing and Awareness: Collaborate to create and update collateral materials, including video and media materials, to support gift cultivation. Develop and implement all aspects of direct donor mailings, appeal letters, and other donor mailings as needed. Write press releases when appropriate. Maintain all social media platforms and website. Increase community awareness through speaking engagements, community meetings and other appropriate forums.
  • Volunteer Development: Oversee and manage all volunteer activities.

Qualifications: 

  • Proficient in systems management skills.
  • Excellent writing, communication, and interpersonal skills are required. 
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking and fundraising experience.
  • Experience using and managing donor database.
  • Proven experience in multiple social media platforms.
  • The ability to lead and direct others, including volunteers.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of grant research and grant writing. 
  • The ability to meet deadlines.
  • The ability to manage staff and volunteers.

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Marketing, Communications or a related field and 5 - 7 years of prior fundraising, donor development, and advancement experience is required.
  • A working knowledge of issues regarding homelessness and a demonstrated and articulated passion for Heading Home’s population.

Other Requirements

  • May require the use of a personal cell phone and will require personal use of a car.
  • May include some travel.
  • Lifting a maximum of 25 pounds occasionally, and frequently lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
  • Must become CPR/First Aid trained within 90 days of hire.
