Summary

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by screening, preventing and treating employees for injuries and illness to help keep patients and the working environment safe.

This position completes and signs off on all new hire assessments and annual employee health screenings. The Employee Health Nurse collaborates with HR to ensure completion of all annual and quad-annual health screenings, N95 fit testing requirements and immunization requirements. This position is also responsible for managing the triage of all worker injuries as well as all body fluid and communicable disease exposures.

Job Description

Job Duties

  • Demonstrates awareness of an adherence to legal requirements pertinent to employee health and safety.
  • Conducts pre-hire screens that includes a medical history review, color blind testing, vital signs, immunization review/update, TB placement/follow-up, N95 fit testing.
  • Collaborates with HR to ensure completion of all annual and quad-annual health screenings, N95 fit testing requirements and immunization requirements. Assists HR in maintaining employee health records and inputting data into HR system.
  • Refers employees with identifiable limitations and/or health risks to appropriate resources. Offers educational materials to employees, when appropriate.
  • Acts as a resource to Infection Control when employees have been exposed to a communicable disease. Follows up with employee exposures and with a plan for treatment/follow up. Triages employees for communicable disease and make recommendations for follow-up.
  • Manages the body fluid exposure process which includes contacting the employee, reviewing lab results, providing education, consulting with MD and closing of the case.
  • Tracks and inputs all exposure data into the MIDAS safety reporting software.
  • Plans and coordinates the annual flu clinic including date determination, room reservation, vaccine/supplies/materials ordering, IT/portal information update and communication plan to employees/staff.
  • Triages employee injuries and coordinates follow up. Provides employee illness/injury reporting information to HR.
  • Conducts annual sharps safety evaluation in coordination with Infection Control.
  • Fulfills some or all of the duties of a Patient Service Coordinator, Patient Care Staff, or Patient Service Liaison in the Employee Health Center, as needed.
  • Participates as an active member of hospital-wide committees at the request of executive level management. Examples: Environment of Care, Infection Prevention, Employee Safety Committee, Lean Events.
  • Responds to calls from house supervisors on off-hours to assist with the management of exposures that occur within the hospital.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Strong skills in planning, organizing and delegating.
  • Ability to communicate with individuals from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Must have the ability to work independently and make critical decisions concerning an employee's health.
  • Strong coordination skills are required.

Professional Experience

  • Preferred: Two years of experience implementing and coordinating employee health functions for an employer.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of JCAHO and OSHA regulations.

Education

  • Required: Bachelor's Degree, Nursing

Licensure, Certification, Registration

  • Required: Registered Nurse License – State of Iowa
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse and Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
