Fleet Mechanic, Motor Pool--Employees & PublicAnnual Salary Range: $38,987.83 - $46,772.39-Grade: 23The City of Alexandria is seeking professional individuals to begin a career in government Motor Pool Department, located in the heart of Central Louisiana-to perform technical and skilled mechanical, maintenance and repairs on city fleet vehicles, heavy-duty trucks, buses, fire and police vehicles and apparatus, heavy mobile equipment, and related equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Supervisor of Fleet Maintenance.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • -------- Performs mechanical repairs on gas and diesel automotive and mechanical equipment, such as lawnmowers, boats, trailers, forklifts, engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical systems, front ends, brakes, and AC systems. Repair hydraulic cylinders, valves, and hoses. Uses computer and diagnostic equipment to determine mechanical problems, and research to complete repairs. Submit work orders and order parts. -Uses a variety of mechanics' tools in completing repairs and maintenance tasks.
  • -------- Performs minor welding and fabricating of parts as needed. Road tests vehicles to ensure repairs are complete. Completes preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Follows established safety precautions; disposes of oils, solvents, and other products per EPA regulations. Receives service calls and drives wrecker to tow disabled vehicles; operates according to OSHA and State DOT laws and regulations; and provides road repairs as necessary. Conducts motor vehicle inspections. Prepares required maintenance and repair records. May operate a forklift.-
  • -------- Under general supervision performs mechanical repairs and skilled maintenance activities to restore fleet vehicles and equipment to service and safe operation.-

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED, with vocational or technical training in automotive and/or diesel equipment repair. -Necessary Requirements:

Valid State of Louisiana Class D driver's license within one (1) month of hire.- Position(s) whose assignments include Fire apparatus maintenance must complete the required training as identified by the Fire Department. Must obtain a state of Louisiana motor vehicle inspection certification within one year of hire.
