General Description

The Grading Foreman supervises field operations for earthwork, roadway, and grading projects. This role involves directly managing grading crews, ensuring efficient execution of work, and maintaining compliance with safety and quality standards. The Grading Foreman may also perform trade work alongside the crew as needed.

Key Duties

Supervision & Project Execution:

  • Directly supervise grading crews and coordinate daily activities.
  • Communicate professionally with supervisors, teammates, contractors, clients, and vendors.
  • Implement bid strategies and sequencing plans to optimize fieldwork efficiency.
  • Report daily work progress, materials, and site conditions to the Superintendent.

Grading & Equipment Operations:

  • Operate and supervise heavy equipment for grading and site development.
  • Read, interpret, and execute grading plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Monitor soil conditions, surveying requirements, and excavation work.
  • Ensure compliance with production and quantity requirements.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Conduct safety orientations, toolbox talks, and on-site training.
  • Monitor and document safety compliance and provide coaching for improvement.
  • Maintain awareness of job site hazards, mobile equipment movement, and other safety concerns.

General Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with soil technicians and survey teams to schedule and verify grading work.
  • Perform incidental duties in other crafts as needed to support project success.
  • Available to work day or night shifts, including weekends, as required.

Qualification Requirements

Education & Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 3–5 years of experience as a Grading Foreman or in a related role.
  • Strong understanding of grading techniques, excavation, and site preparation.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings, specifications, and grading plans.
  • Proficiency in operating grading equipment and site preparation tools.
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Physical Demands

  • Constant standing, bending, stooping, and crouching for at least 8 hours per shift.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs frequently and up to 150 lbs with assistance.
  • Walk on uneven terrain in varying weather conditions.
  • Maintain constant awareness of construction site activities.
  • Safely climb on and off heavy equipment as needed.
  • Capable of working in confined spaces and excavations up to 20 feet deep using ladders or crawling.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor construction sites in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to high noise levels, grease, dust, and heavy machinery.
  • Regular work near moving equipment and construction materials.
  • Handling of materials such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and asphalt.
