Position Summary:
The Wafer Fab Operator is responsible for independent execution of wafer fabrication processes in an InP-based photonics manufacturing environment. This role supports the production of lasers, gain chips, and other III-V photonic devices by operating advanced semiconductor equipment, maintaining process control, and ensuring high-quality wafer output.
The Op2 operator works with moderate supervision and plays a key role in process stability, yield improvement, and WIP flow management.
Responsibilities:
Wafer Processing & Equipment Operation:
- Independently operate semiconductor equipment, including:
- Photolithography tools (spin coat, mask aligner, developer)
- Dry etch systems (ICP/RIE) and chemical wet etch stations
- Thin film deposition (PECVD, sputtering)
- Execute process steps according to SOPs and process recipes
- Perform wafer handling with high care to prevent damage or contamination
- Ensure proper lot tracking and movement through MES/travelers
Process Monitoring & Quality Control:
- Monitor critical process parameters (temperature, pressure, gas flow, alignment accuracy)
- Perform in-process inspections:
- Optical microscope inspection
- Film thickness/index/stress measurement (profilometer/ellipsometer/flexus)
- Identify abnormal conditions and deviations from process specs
- Escalate issues to Op3 or Technician as needed
WIP Management & Documentation:
- Accurately record process data, equipment logs, and lot history
- Track wafer status and ensure correct process flow progression
- Support cycle time targets and prioritize lot movement
Continuous Improvement & Engineering Support:
- Assist in engineering runs, DOE experiments, and process qualifications
- Provide feedback on process issues and yield trends
- Support implementation of process improvements
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Working knowledge of:
- Thin film deposition processes
- Dry and wet etching techniques
- Photolithography processes (coating, alignment, exposure, development)
- Familiarity with semiconductor process flow, especially for III-V / InP devices
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot fab equipment with minimal supervision
- Strong attention to detail and contamination control
- Ability to follow SOPs while recognizing abnormal conditions
- Experience with MES systems and electronic lot tracking
- Basic data recording and interpretation (SPC awareness preferred)
- Ability to work in a cleanroom environment for extended periods
- Handling of chemicals (acids, solvents) with proper safety procedures
- Handling fragile III-V wafers with precision
- Ability to wear full cleanroom gown (including mask, gloves, and suit)
Desired Qualifications:
- Associate degree in electronics, semiconductor manufacturing, or related field
- 2–3 years of experience in semiconductor wafer fabrication (III-V or photonics preferred)
- Experience in cleanroom environment (Class 100–1000)
- Good communication and teamwork
- Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability
