UPMC Altoona is seeking a full-time Anesthesia Technician to support Anesthesiology on day shifts (9am-5:30pm), with call on weekends & holidays.

Join our dynamic surgical team as a dedicated Anesthesia Technician, where your expertise and attention to detail will directly support safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care. In this hands-on role, you’ll work closely with anesthesia providers to ensure operating rooms are fully equipped, organized, and ready for each procedure. From setting up specialized equipment to managing critical supplies, your contributions will be essential to the smooth turnover of surgical cases and the overall success of our perioperative services.

What You'll Do

You’ll be a vital part of the anesthesia team, responsible for a wide range of technical and logistical tasks, including:

  • Supporting anesthesia providers during cardiac and general surgeries
  • Preparing and maintaining anesthesia equipment and monitoring devices
  • Ensuring all anesthesia carts and workspaces are clean, stocked, and organized
  • Transporting blood products and lab specimens as needed
  • Assisting in the Holding Room and PACU when directed
  • Responding to emergency situations and adhering to safety protocols
  • Participating in the orientation of new staff
  • Maintaining compliance with JCAHO, OSHA, and hospital policies

Responsibilities:

Anesthesia Equipment & Supplies

  • Set up, operate, maintain, and decontaminate anesthesia equipment and monitoring devices

  • Ensure all equipment is functional, properly stored, and promptly reported for repair if needed

  • Clean and restock anesthesia machines, carts, and shelves in the OR, OB C-section rooms, and special procedure areas

  • Maintain and clean reusable items (e.g., endotracheal tubes, laryngoscopes, LMAs, blades) and return them to designated areas

  • Track equipment maintenance in service logs and coordinate with Biomed and management as needed

Case Preparation & Room Turnover

  • Assist anesthesia providers in preparing for procedures by setting up pressure monitoring systems, IV infusion sets, and other supplies

  • Facilitate efficient OR turnover between cases by ensuring rooms are clean, stocked, and ready for the next patient

  • Remain present in the anesthesia workroom/OR suite during shifts, except during breaks or job-related tasks

Logistics & Support

  • Retrieve and transport blood products, lab specimens, and other items as requested

  • Assist with patient and equipment transport as needed during surgeries

  • Support anesthesia providers in the Holding Room and PACU as directed

Inventory & Ordering

  • Maintain adequate stock of anesthesia supplies in all areas

  • Order supplies using the requisition system and notify supervisor of backorders or special requests

Compliance & Safety

  • Follow hospital policies and procedures to meet JCAHO and OSHA standards

  • Adhere to universal precautions and report safety hazards or equipment issues promptly

  • Respond appropriately to emergency situations under the direction of anesthesia providers

Team Collaboration

  • Assist in orienting new staff members as directed

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors or anesthesia providers



  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Must be able to take call as established by written policy that may result in employee working more than eight hours in one day.
  • Two years experience as an anesthesia technician or equivalent preferred.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • Act 34
