Construction Crewman

JOB SUMMARY   

This position performs duties in the maintenance and repair of the canal system.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS       

• Operate equipment, including but not limited to a chainsaw, weed eater, a post-hole digger, and water pumps.
• Repairs fences, gates, pumping plant buildings, houses, and offices.
•  Assists in the installation of underdrains, water gates, and irrigation pipes.
• Maintains and services assigned equipment; performs minor repairs as needed.
• Mows grass on top of levees, at pumping plants, and at job sites; assists in the application of herbicides.
• Picks up and delivers materials and supplies.
• Assists in the repair and construction of bridges.
• Inspects and maintains safety equipment.
• Ensure all external customers, vendors, contractors, government regulators & members of the public relationships are maintained on a professional and productive basis.
• Contribute to a safe work environment by following the Authority’s safety rules, guidelines, and procedures.
• Interact with organization team members and other departments professionally.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT                                                                                                                                  

• The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, utilizes the sense of smell, and distinguishes between shades of color.
• The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, and machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals, venomous snakes, and alligators. Work requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

QUALIFICATIONS/PREFERRED SKILLS 

• High School/GED diploma required.
• Understanding & competency in utilizing a wide variety of software & computer applications, including MS Office, Outlook, and other applications specific to the job.
• Skill in the safe and effective operation of assigned vehicles, tools & equipment.
• Understand and carry out oral & written directions.
• Valid Driver’s License
