Human Resources Generalist
SeaBear Smokehouse, a leader in artisan, small-batch seafood production, is seeking a people-focused and highly organized Human Resources Generalist. This role is responsible for supporting daily human resources operations in a fast-paced production environment. This role administers a variety of HR programs including employee relations, leave management, workers’ compensation (L&I), unemployment claims, and compliance with federal and Washington state laws (including FMLA and WA Paid Family & Medical Leave). The ideal candidate brings strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to build relationships with a diverse workforce.
This full-time, onsite position is based at our headquarters and smokehouse in beautiful Anacortes, Washington. The Human Resources Generalist will work a Monday–Friday schedule (onsite only) and reports directly to our President/CEO.

Key Responsibilities
Employee Relations & Support
- Serve as a primary point of contact for employee inquiries and HR-related issues
- Partner with managers to address employee relations concerns and support investigations
- Promote a positive workplace culture aligned with company values
Leave and Benefits Administration
- Administer employee leave programs, including:Â
- Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
- Washington Paid Family & Medical Leave (WA PFML)
- Track leave usage, ensure proper documentation, and maintain compliance with applicable regulations
- Coordinate return-to-work processes and accommodations
Workers’ Compensation (L&I) & Unemployment Claims
- Manage all aspects of workers’ compensation (L&I) claims, including reporting, follow-up, and return-to-work coordination
- Partner with medical providers and managers to support injured workers
- Handle unemployment claims, including responses to inquiries, documentation, and participation in hearings as needed
Compliance & Policy Administration
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations
- Maintain accurate employee records and HR documentation
- Assist with audits, reporting, and regulatory requirements
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Support hiring efforts for production and non-production roles
- Coordinate onboarding and orientation for new employees
- Maintain employment records and onboarding documentation
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 3+ years of HR experience, preferably in a manufacturing or production environment
- Direct experience with:Â
- Workers’ Compensation / L&I claims
- Unemployment claims administration
- FMLA and WA PFML
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of employment laws and HR best practices
- Experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to handle confidential information with discretion
- Proficiency in HRIS systems and Microsoft Office
Work Environment
- Primarily based in a production/manufacturing setting
- May require time on the production floor interacting with employees and supervisors
- Ability to respond to urgent employee or operational needs
Compensation
- Hourly pay range between $33-$36/hr., DOE
