Sonic Summary

info
  • Pen Manufacturing is seeking a Metal Fabrication Detailer with an extensive background in metals manufacturing and related fields.
  • The position requires a Bachelor’s degree and proven success in project management, with a hunter mentality for sales.
  • The role involves client engagement, project management, and leveraging technology to optimize workflow and communication.
  • Compensation is competitive, including performance-based incentives and opportunities for growth.
  • Candidates should be driven problem-solvers with excellent communication skills and a deep understanding of machining and fabrication processes.

The Opportunity

You are not starting from zero.

Pen has an established Southern California fabrication operation, experienced engineering and production capabilities, technology enabled estimating and quoting processes, and an active pipeline of open construction quotes and opportunities ready to pursue.

We have the fabrication capabilities and infrastructure experience. What we're looking for now is a commercially minded construction professional who can help turn that platform into significant growth.

You'll have opportunities to pursue from day one while also developing relationships with general contractors and building your own pipeline.

We're looking for someone who sees an active bid pipeline and asks: How much of this can I win?

What You'll Do

  • Independently estimate and bid Division 5 miscellaneous metals projects
  • Perform takeoffs from construction drawings and specifications
  • Price materials, fabrication, outside processing, installation requirements, and other project costs
  • Prepare and submit competitive bids to general contractors
  • Aggressively follow up on open quotes and turn bids into awarded projects
  • Build relationships with estimators, project managers, and decision makers at Southern California general contractors
  • Negotiate scope, pricing, value engineering opportunities, and commercial terms
  • Identify new projects and bidding opportunities
  • Grow existing contractor relationships and develop new accounts
  • Coordinate with engineering, fabrication, and operations after award
  • Visit customers and jobsites as needed
  • Track pipeline, bid volume, hit rate, revenue, and margins

What We're Looking For

  • 5+ years of experience estimating Division 5 miscellaneous metals, structural steel, or closely related construction scopes
  • Ability to independently estimate projects from plans and specifications
  • Strong understanding of miscellaneous metals fabrication and construction
  • Experience submitting bids to and working directly with general contractors
  • Demonstrated ability to follow up, negotiate, and help close work
  • Existing Southern California GC relationships are strongly preferred
  • Experience with stairs, railings, ladders, platforms, structural supports, embeds, bollards, gates, and similar fabricated metal scopes is highly preferred
  • Hungry, competitive, resourceful, and comfortable being accountable for revenue

A college degree is not required. Relevant construction estimating, fabrication, and sales experience matters more.

Compensation

$70,000 to $150,000 base depending on experience, plus performance based incentive compensation tied to profitable growth.

Strong performers will have significant opportunity to grow their compensation and responsibility as the Division 5 business expands.

Who Will Do Well Here

We are not looking for someone who simply processes bid invitations and waits for the next RFQ.

We want someone who can find the opportunity, price the job, work the relationship, follow up relentlessly, and win the order.

If you've spent your career around miscellaneous metals or structural steel construction and want the opportunity to help build a significant Southern California construction business on top of an established fabrication platform, we'd like to talk.
