Automation Technician I

Position Summary

The Automation Technician I is an entry-level technical position responsible for assisting with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of automation and control systems. This role supports senior automation technicians and electricians in performing field work related to instrumentation, control panels, PLC systems, and electrical components. The Automation Technician I is expected to follow company safety procedures, learn industry best practices, and develop the technical skills required to work independently in industrial and oil and gas environments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Assist with the installation, wiring, and commissioning of automation and control systems.
• Support installation and maintenance of PLC panels, instrumentation devices, sensors, and control wiring.
• Assist with running conduit, pulling cable, and terminating control wiring.
• Help install and maintain instrumentation such as pressure transmitters, flow meters, level sensors, and temperature devices.
• Perform basic troubleshooting of automation and electrical systems under supervision.
• Assist with calibrating instrumentation and testing control system components.
• Read and interpret basic electrical and instrumentation drawings including loop diagrams and wiring diagrams.
• Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean and safe condition.
• Follow all company safety procedures, policies, and site-specific safety plans.
• Participate in job safety meetings, hazard assessments, and required safety training.
• Assist in documenting work performed, testing results, and system changes.
• Work with senior technicians, electricians, and supervisors to complete assigned tasks safely and efficiently.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED.
• Basic knowledge of electrical systems or industrial equipment.
• Ability to safely use hand tools and basic power tools.
• Ability to read basic electrical or instrumentation diagrams (preferred but not required).
• Strong willingness to learn automation and control systems.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical certificate or coursework in electrical technology, instrumentation, or automation.
• Basic familiarity with PLC systems such as Allen-Bradley or Siemens.
• Experience with industrial electrical or instrumentation work.
• OSHA 10 certification.
• H2S Awareness training.
• First Aid / CPR certification.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
• Ability to stand, walk, climb ladders, kneel, and work in confined spaces.
• Ability to perform overhead work and operate hand and power tools.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, wind, and dust.

Work Environment

This position may require work in industrial facilities, construction sites, and oil and gas field environments. Employees may be exposed to loud noise, heavy equipment, elevated work areas, and energized equipment. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.

Safety Responsibilities

• Follow all company Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies and procedures.
• Participate in required safety meetings and safety training.
• Use proper Lockout/Tagout procedures when working around electrical equipment.
• Identify and report hazards, near misses, or unsafe conditions immediately.
• Wear required PPE including flame-resistant clothing and other protective equipment as required by the work environment.
