General Description

The Director of Accounting is a senior finance position within the United States Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation. This role serves as a key strategic partner to the Executive Director of Finance and provides leadership across financial analysis, investment reporting, audit and tax support, system and process improvements, and enterprise-wide finance projects.

The position requires a strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, financial reporting, and complex general ledger structures. The successful candidate must be highly analytical, detail-oriented, collaborative, and comfortable translating financial information into clear, useful insights for leadership, board committees, external partners, and internal stakeholders.

This position is expected to operate with a high degree of independence, manage competing priorities, lead cross-functional projects, and serve as a trusted resource and backup to the Executive Director of Finance. This is an exempt position.

This position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience and the opportunity to participate in the organization's annual bonus program, when eligible. Bonus awards are discretionary and not guaranteed. You would also be eligible for a generous benefits plan which includes medical, dental, vision, an FSA, an HSA, a fully-vested 403(b) retirement plan with employer matching, 22 days of accrued paid time off (PTO) per fiscal year, 14 paid holidays per calendar year, group life insurance, short-term & long-term disability, identity theft protection, and annual opportunities for professional development. Although not guaranteed, certain additional benefits may be offered through the Naval Academy, such as use of certain recreational facilities (including the Brigade Sports Complex gym, marina and indoor/outdoor pools), as well as category II eligibility for employee children to apply to the Naval Academy Primary School.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and analyze financial reports, variance analyses, dashboards, schedules, and presentation materials for leadership, board committees, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support budget development, forecasting, financial modeling, and other analysis that informs organizational planning and decision-making.
  • Oversee investment and endowment accounting analysis, including reconciliations, investment activity, gains and losses, income, fees, and related financial statement impacts.
  • Coordinate with custodians, investment advisors, auditors, consultants, and service providers to resolve reporting, reconciliation, and documentation matters.
  • Assist staff in monthly and year-end close processes, reviewing financial activity, reconciliations, analyses, and supporting documentation to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Support preparation of audit schedules, financial statement support, Form 990 information, and other tax or compliance materials.
  • Research accounting and reporting questions and assist with documenting conclusions, recommendations, and management responses.
  • Lead or support strategic finance initiatives, special projects, system improvements, and process changes from planning through implementation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting, workflows, internal controls, documentation, automation, and overall department efficiency.
  • Develop procedures, training materials, project plans, and other documentation to support consistency and knowledge sharing across Finance.
  • Partner with departments across the organization to answer financial questions, explain results, gather requirements, and recommend practical solutions.
  • Serve as a backup to the Executive Director of Finance on assigned matters and cross-functional initiatives.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop assigned finance staff, and perform other duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related discipline required.
  • CPA, CFA, MBA, or progress toward one of these credentials preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive accounting, finance, financial analysis, or related experience required; prior public accounting experience preferred.
  • Nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, endowment, investment, or complex general ledger experience is strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting; familiarity with nonprofit accounting standards preferred.
  • Experience preparing audit schedules, financial statement support, Form 990 information, or related compliance materials preferred.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills required; experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT, Blackbaud CRM, or similar systems preferred.
  • Strong analytical, research, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, lead projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing business needs.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with staff, leadership, external partners, auditors, and vendors.
  • Prior supervisory, mentoring, or project leadership experience preferred.
