Human Resources announces an opening for (1.0) Assistant Director of Extended Day with the Department of School Support. This is a full-time, in-person, Grade P-11 position.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESÂ
The Assistant Director collaborates daily with the Director, Extended Day in support of the operation of elementary school Extended
Day Programs, the central Extended Day office, and the Middle School Check-In Program. A major responsibility of this position
involves the management of the personnel component of the program, staff development and ensuring the needs of all students are
met, including those with special needs.Â
RESPONSIBILITIES:
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK (May not include all duties performed – These are intended as an illustration of the various

• Develops and operates all personnel related issues in Extended Day, including: recruitment, interviews, staff selections, personnel/
payroll memos, etc.
• Monitors Extended Day sites to ensure compliance with Virginia Department of Social Services Standards for Licensed Child Care
Centers.
• Supports Extended Day supervisors and staff to ensure compliance with Out of School Time principles and best practice and high
quality, asset-building programming.
• Collaborates with school and Extended Day staff to ensure inclusion of children with disabilities.
• Develops, conducts and manages staff development for Extended Day supervisors and staff.
• Provides technical support for the supervisors of the elementary and middle school programs.
• Supports the Extended Day Central Office staff in registration, fee collection, and other administrative tasks and responsibilities.
• Participates in the twice yearly evaluations for the elementary and middle school supervisors and staff and the staff of the Extended
Day Central Office.
• Maintains collaboration with building administrations to assure the operation of a quality program in each elementary and middle
school.
• Maintains collaboration with the accounting, purchasing, personnel, maintenance, food services, information systems and other
support programs to insure effective operation of the program.
• Manages the program in the absence of the director.
• Collaborates with the Extended Day Director on reports, budget, staffing, day to day operation of program, etc.
• Support the efforts of specialists by providing technical advice and guidance.
• Performs related duties as required or assigned.
EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
•Experience working with students, families, and staff from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
• Thorough knowledge of goals, procedures and practices of the APS Extended Day Program.
• Thorough knowledge of the principles and best practices of Out of School Time programs and the Search Institute’s Developmental
Assets.
• Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of school administration and current educational trends as applied to special
education population.
• Ability to manage, supervise and participate in the planning and implementation of program activities; and train, monitor and work
effectively with Extended Day staff.
• Ability to respond to situations in a professional, courteous, tactful manner.
• Ability to understand and to carry out complex oral and written instructions and program goals.
• Ability to maintain records and to prepare accurate reports.
• Ability to work under pressure and to meet the demands of deadlines.
• Ability to safely supervise the activities of children in a variety of settings.
• Ability to maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with students, staff, parents and administrators.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree with major work in education, childcare recreation or related field, and some experience in teaching,
administration and supervision, preferably in an extended-day program; or any equivalent combination of education and experience
that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability.Â
SALARY
- Salary range: $91,779 to $150,426 based on the 25/26 pay plan.
