ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (The following may not include all duties performed; not all incumbents perform all essential functions delineated) On assigned shift, plans, assigns, supervises, and participates the full range of cleaning, preventative and routine maintenance and building and grounds security tasks. Instructs subordinates and sets expected levels of performance in cleaning, building and grounds maintenance, proper use of equipment, materials and supplies, and other routines. Ensures that prescribed maintenance standards are maintained with respect to plant, equipment, property, and grounds. Performs and/or sees that preventive maintenance, adjustments, and minor repairs are performed to HVAC, electrical and heating systems, plumbing, windows, etc. Supervises and participates in snow removal, lawn mowing, grounds maintenance. Ensures that proper safety and security precautions are observed. Arranges/rearranges rooms for community activities and assists school and community groups which utilize the building. Transports and empties large trash containers into outdoor units. Moves and transports furniture, equipment, boxed textbooks, and other supplies, weighing up to 35 pounds, manually or with mechanical assistance; loads/unloads trucks. Locks and unlocks doors, checks the security of buildings and grounds, activates the alarm system; lowers flags. Reports on employees' work hours and performance; initiates disciplinary action as needed. Performs related work as required or assigned

 

NOTE HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS:  Employee is exposed to potential chemical hazards and toxic substances when using cleaning liquids, solvents and solutions, to potential biological hazards when cleaning restrooms, and to potential physical hazards when operating custodian equipment. Work also exposes employee to dust, fumes and occasionally to adverse weather conditions. Work requires the frequent use of safety clothing and equipment and compliance with safety procedures.

 

Graduation from high school or completion of GED and a considerable progression of more responsible experience in public building custodial work, some of which shall have been at the Custodian III level; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills, and ability. Ability to train, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of subordinates and participate in all phases of building cleaning activities.  Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions, and to maintain records and prepare routine reports. Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships with school personnel, students, and the general public.

 

Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and practices used in custodial work and in the proper use and care of equipment. Thorough knowledge of the means of protecting self and others from the potential hazard from exposure to blood born pathogens, excrement and other body fluids, and of safe effective cleaning and disposal methods. Skill in the use of a floor buffing, carpet shampooer and general building maintenance tools

 

Salary:

Salary range based on FY26-27 Pay Plan.

Newly hired employees can receive up to 5 years of salary credit for experience in their field.
