Field Software Engineer

Location: Remote (with potential travel to deployment sites)
Compensation: Competitive salary + bonus + equity (where applicable)

About the Role
We are building a next-generation maritime intelligence platform that transforms global fleets into a persistent sensing network. By combining edge computing, advanced sensors, and satellite connectivity, we operate in some of the most remote and challenging environments in the world—processing large-scale RF and visual data in real time to deliver critical insights.

We are seeking a Field Software Engineer to take ownership of the configuration, activation, and ongoing reliability of distributed edge systems deployed in the field. This role sits at the intersection of software, hardware, and networking, ensuring that newly installed systems come online quickly and operate reliably at scale.

You will act as the remote operator and technical backbone for deployed systems—bringing nodes online, troubleshooting issues in real time, and ensuring continuous performance across a global fleet.

Key Responsibilities

Remotely provision and configure edge compute nodes immediately following physical installation, including satellite connectivity, cameras, and sensor systems
Activate and integrate newly deployed systems into a distributed global network
Monitor system health and serve as the escalation point for diagnosing and resolving technical issues

Independently troubleshoot Linux-based systems, including debugging headless machines, resolving container failures, and addressing hardware-software integration issues
Maintain reliability of systems operating in constrained and unpredictable environments, including limited connectivity and power instability

Collaborate cross-functionally with field technicians, backend engineering, and AI/ML teams to ensure seamless deployment and operation
Act as the bridge between hardware deployment and software/data systems, ensuring alignment across teams

Continuously improve deployment processes, tooling, and system resilience to support rapid scaling of the network

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)
3–8+ years of experience in systems administration, field engineering, technical support engineering, or distributed systems operations
Deep hands-on experience with Linux systems administration, including bash scripting and managing headless environments
Strong networking fundamentals, including TCP/IP, NAT/CGNAT, routing, VPNs, and network troubleshooting
Experience deploying and operating containerized workloads using tools such as Docker and lightweight orchestration platforms (e.g., K3s)
Proven ability to diagnose and resolve hardware–software integration issues in real-world environments
Ability to operate effectively in conditions with intermittent connectivity, latency, and infrastructure constraints

Preferred Experience

Experience working with video streaming pipelines such as RTSP, WebRTC, GStreamer, or ffmpeg
Familiarity with Software Defined Radios (SDRs), RF systems, or tools such as GNU Radio
Exposure to maritime technologies or protocols such as AIS or NMEA data
Experience operating in remote, field-based, or mission-critical environments
Active U.S. Security Clearance, or willingness and eligibility to obtain one

What We’re Looking For

A highly autonomous operator who can take ownership of complex systems and drive issues to resolution
A strong problem solver who thrives in ambiguity and high-stakes environments
A systems thinker who can connect hardware, software, and networking into a cohesive solution
A collaborative partner who can work across teams and communicate clearly under pressure

Why Join Us

This is an opportunity to work on cutting-edge technology deployed in some of the most extreme environments on the planet. You will play a critical role in building and maintaining a global sensing network, solving complex technical challenges, and contributing to a mission-driven organization operating at the frontier of edge computing and real-time intelligence.
