At the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and the engineering questions related to the practical design and implementation of AI technologies and systems. We currently lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security.Ā

Overview:Ā As a Senior Machine LearningĀ Research Scientist,Ā you will specialize inĀ conductingĀ research into the vulnerabilities of AIĀ andĀ ML algorithms and securing against those vulnerabilities.Ā 

Ā 

TheĀ Secure AIĀ Lab within the SEI’s AI Division focuses on improving the security and robustness of AI systems. As part of the world-class research community at Carnegie Mellon University, theĀ Secure AIĀ LabĀ conducts and appliesĀ cutting-edgeĀ research toĀ protectĀ AI systems fromĀ adversaries who aim to manipulateĀ the systemĀ to learn, do, or revealĀ something itĀ isn’tĀ supposed to.Ā Ā

TheĀ Secure AIĀ Lab consists of machine learning research scientists, machine learning engineers, and software developers who work together to solve problems in the following areas:Ā 

  • Counter AI Research:Ā Study threat models targeting AIĀ andĀ ML algorithms,Ā understand the behaviors of AI algorithms,Ā identifyĀ weak points, and design novel ways to subvert AIĀ andĀ ML systems.Ā 

  • AIĀ andĀ MLĀ Algorithm DefenseĀ Research:Ā CreateĀ practical mitigations and defenses forĀ observedĀ attacksĀ affecting AIĀ andĀ ML algorithmsĀ and evaluate the effectiveness ofĀ defensiveĀ techniques.Ā 

  • AppliedĀ Adversarial Machine Learning:Ā Advance the state of the art inĀ adversarialĀ machineĀ learningĀ by developing and transitioning capabilities to government sponsors.Ā

Your day-to-day research tasks will include:Ā 

  • IdentifyingĀ andĀ investigatingĀ emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies.Ā 

  • Performing andĀ publishingĀ impactful original research in the field ofĀ AIĀ andĀ ML algorithm vulnerabilities and securing against those vulnerabilities.Ā 

  • Adapting andĀ applyingĀ existing research in the field to solve real-world problems.Ā 

  • Transitioning andĀ providingĀ guidanceĀ onĀ AI capabilities to government sponsors.Ā

Duties:  

  • Hands-on research: You’llĀ conduct and lead novel research in applied machine learning and artificial intelligence.Ā 

  • Solution development:Ā You’llĀ work with and lead interdisciplinary teams to turn research results into prototype operational capabilities for government customers and stakeholders.Ā 

  • Strategy: You’llĀ work withĀ the leadership teamĀ and colleagues to plan, develop, and carry out an overall research strategy, and to influence the national research agendaĀ regardingĀ future technology.Ā 

  • Collaboration: You'llĀ activelyĀ participateĀ on teams of software developers, researchers, designers, and technical leads.Ā You'llĀ build relationships and collaborate with researchers, government customers, and other stakeholders to understand challenges, needs,Ā possible solutions, and research directions.Ā 

  • Mentoring:Ā You'llĀ contribute to improving the overall technical capabilities of the DivisionĀ by mentoring and teaching others,Ā participatingĀ in design (software and otherwise) sessions, and sharing insights and wisdom across the SEIĀ AIĀ Division.Ā

Knowledge andĀ ExperienceĀ 

Ā 

  • ComprehensiveĀ knowledge ofĀ machine learning;Ā previousĀ experienceĀ in adversarial machine learningĀ preferredĀ but notĀ requiredĀ 

  • A track recordĀ ofĀ conducting research and applying scientific methodsĀ to solveĀ difficult problemsĀ 

  • ExperienceĀ leadingĀ researchĀ projectsĀ inĀ novelĀ areasĀ with limitedĀ previousĀ work to build uponĀ 

  • AbilityĀ to work with leadership to plan, develop, andĀ deliverĀ an overallĀ researchĀ strategyĀ 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;Ā abilityĀ to convey complex technical ideasĀ inĀ aĀ layperson’s termsĀ 

  • ProficiencyĀ inĀ writingĀ funding proposalsĀ orĀ pitchingĀ ideas forĀ new researchĀ projectsĀ 

  • AmpleĀ experience with publishingĀ written or technicalĀ artifactsĀ showcasingĀ your workĀ 

  • Strong collaboration skills forĀ workingĀ with colleagues and sponsorsĀ Ā 

  • WillingnessĀ toĀ guide andĀ mentorĀ junior team membersĀ

RequirementsĀ 

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, statistics, machine learning, electrical engineering, or related discipline with ten (10) years of experience; OR MS in the same fields with eight (8) years of experience; OR PhD in with five (5) years of experienceĀ 

  • Willingness to work onsite at an SEI facility 5 days per week.

  • Be able to obtain andĀ maintainĀ an active Department of War security clearance.Ā 

  • Willing to travel up to 25% of the time to locations outside of your home location. Travel sites include SEI offices in Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C., sponsor sites, and conferences.Ā
