POSITION SUMMARY:

The Advanced Swim Instructor is responsible for leading Y swim lessons in accordance with YMCA of the USA standards. This role includes ensuring participant safety, delivering high-quality instruction, and engaging swimmers in a positive learning environment. The Advanced Swim Instructor works with more experienced swimmers and focuses on continued skill development, stroke technique, endurance, and overall swimmer progression. This role combines elements of swim instruction and coaching to help swimmers continue advancing their abilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead swim lessons using the Y curriculum, adapting instruction to meet the needs and abilities of individual swimmers.

  • Provide instruction and coaching to more advanced swimmers, with a focus on continued skill development, stroke technique, endurance, and progression.

  • Ensure participant safety and enforce all pool rules during lessons.

  • Accurately assess swimmer progress and provide honest, constructive feedback to promote skill advancement.

  • Provide appropriate drills and activities to help swimmers improve technique and build confidence.

  • Support consistency and quality in lesson delivery by following established progression standards.

  • Maintain up-to-date swim instructor certification and stay informed of current instructional practices.

  • Assist with administrative tasks such as recordkeeping, participant communication, and reporting as directed by the Swim Director.

  • Prepare lesson areas with necessary equipment and return equipment to storage after use.

  • Maintain regular attendance and, if absent, coordinate a qualified substitute and provide lesson plans.

  • Help promote Y swim lesson programs and support participant retention and continued swimmer development.

  • Foster a clean, inclusive, and engaging environment for all swimmers and families.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Advanced Swim Instructors will meet the qualifications set forth by the Y in Central Maryland. Associates shall be of good character and reputation; capable of carrying out assigned responsibilities; capable of accepting training and supervision; and capable of communicating effectively both orally and in writing as applicable to the job responsibility. Minimum qualifications include:

  • Prior experience teaching swim lessons required.

  • Experience working with intermediate or advanced swimmers preferred.

  • Swim coaching or competitive swimming experience preferred.

  • Current Swim Instructor Certification (e.g., YMCA of the USA, WSI, or equivalent).

  • Current certification in CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration (O2 within 30 days of hire).

  • Preferred: Lifeguard certification.

  • Successful completion of the Y in Central Maryland swim test.

  • Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends.

  • Completion of all required new hire training, including Child Abuse Prevention, prior to first shift.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  1. Will be required to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, push, and lift up to 50 pounds.

  2. While performing duties the employee may occasionally work in the outside weather conditions, and is exposed to wet, cold and /or humid conditions.

  3. Must be physically able to work in a hot and humid environment with moderate physical exercise.

  4. Continuous operations requiring attention to detail and multi-tasking.

  5. Will be exposed to cleaning supplies.

  6. Will be exposed to pool chemicals.

  7. Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time.

  8. Must be physically able to successfully complete required certifications.

  9. Pool safety and instructional equipment, some computer skills required.

An offer of employment is contingent upon receipt of satisfactory results to meet minimum requirements for the position. They may include a background check, drug test, driver’s license record, CPS, and/or Criminal Background check.

Additional driver’s license check, CPS, Criminal Background check, alcohol and/or drug testing may be required to be processed in the future in order to meet and maintain the minimum requirements of this position.

It emphasizes treating youth with respect and fairness, avoiding inappropriate physical or verbal interactions, and adhering to established standards of affection. Additionally, associates and volunteers must complete training on child abuse prevention and comply with legal reporting requirements to safeguard youth.
