Part-Time Utility and Critical Water Sampling Technician

Position Summary

I-2-I Solutions is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Utility and Critical Water Sampling Technician to support water-quality monitoring within the Sterile Processing Service Department at the Asheville VA Medical Center.

The technician will collect utility and critical-water samples from designated locations, perform assigned field measurements, maintain accurate sampling documentation, and prepare samples for laboratory transportation. Occasional repeat or emergency sampling may also be required.

Responsibilities

  • Collect utility and critical-water samples from designated locations within the Sterile Processing Service Department.
  • Collect samples from reprocessing areas, storage tanks, treatment-system outlets, feedlines, and other assigned sampling points.
  • Collect samples for bacteria, endotoxin, total organic carbon, hardness, and ionic-contaminant testing.
  • Perform assigned field measurements, which may include pH, conductivity or resistivity, temperature, color, and turbidity.
  • Follow approved sampling procedures to prevent contamination and maintain sample integrity.
  • Properly label, preserve, and store samples.
  • Complete field logs, sample records, and chain-of-custody documentation accurately.
  • Prepare samples for timely delivery or shipment to the designated laboratory.
  • Maintain sampling meters, coolers, supplies, and equipment in clean working condition.
  • Report damaged sampling points, abnormal readings, or unusual water-quality conditions.
  • Coordinate sampling visits with I-2-I Solutions and VA personnel.
  • Support emergency and repeat sampling assignments when requested.
  • Complete required VA compliance-awareness and records-management training.

Work Schedule

  • Routine sampling will generally be performed once per month.
  • Monthly work must normally be completed between the 10th and 15th of each month.
  • Work will be performed between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
  • Additional annual, emergency, or repeat sampling may be required.
  • Emergency assignments must be completed within five business days of notification.
  • Hours will vary depending on the sampling event.

Qualifications

  • Previous experience in water sampling, environmental work, laboratory operations, healthcare, sterile processing, or specimen collection is preferred.
  • Ability to follow detailed written sampling procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate recordkeeping.
  • Ability to prevent sample contamination and maintain sample integrity.
  • Experience using portable water-quality meters or field-testing equipment is preferred.
  • Ability to complete chain-of-custody and sample-tracking forms.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to lift and carry sampling equipment and coolers.
  • Ability to work independently in an active medical-facility environment.
  • Ability to meet VA identity-verification, access, compliance, and training requirements.
