Job Summary


 

The Student Intern will support the Engineering team by assisting with various tasks related to documentation, design, and machine operations. The role offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fields of engineering design, process documentation, and machine operations. The intern will assist with updating and maintaining engineering documents, preparing and logging engineering drawings, and supporting program managers and project engineers in process-related tasks. The position also involves machine setup and operation, performing machine tool capability studies, and verifying the conformance of workpieces. 

Responsibilities 


 

  • Ensure all engineering documents are kept up-to-date and correctly revised, including the completion of Engineering Change Requests (ECRs). 

  • Design and implement data sheets for documentation purposes. 

  • Prepare and log engineering drawings, including process specifications and tooling drawings. 

  • Maintain master files for all engineering documents and ensure they are current. 

  • Support Program Managers/Project Engineers with process documentation and related tasks. 

  • Create fully detailed engineering drawings with necessary specifications. 

  • Control and update plant layouts as required. 

  • Set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machines to fabricate metallic parts. 

  • Start and observe machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, making necessary adjustments. 

  • Verify the conformance of finished workpieces to specifications using precision measuring instruments. 

  • Set up machines for trial runs to verify machine settings or programmed control data. 

  • Perform tool changes and document machine tool capability studies. 

  • Ensure adherence to machine settings and programs during production as outlined in Tool Lists and Cycle Time sheets. 

  • Perform additional duties as assigned 


 

Academic/Educational Requirements 


 

  • Enrolled in a Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics program at an accredited university or college; or equivalent expertise gained through professional experience, training, or certifications. 


 

Required Skills/Experience


 

  • A Proficiency in AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar 3D engineering modeling software. 

  • Good report writing and documentation skills. 

  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, assembly drawings, blueprints, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T). 

  • Ability to manage and track project details and materials in tables and forms. 

  • Ability to present design details in a clear and user-friendly format for construction or manufacturing employees. 

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with attention to detail in verifying dimensions and specifications. 

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate with peers and co-workers. 

  • A desire to learn and absorb new information about technology and industry advancements through training and self-study. 

  • Ability to work in a team environment, share ideas, and provide input on projects. 

  • Strong analytical skills to compare drawings and ensure consistency across design documents. 

  • Willingness to take initiative in learning new concepts and contributing to team goals. 

  • Ability to contribute to the continuous improvement of processes and documentation within the engineering department.
