GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To operate, service and maintain medium and heavy trucks or other internal combustion engine equipment used in routine road maintenance or construction operations; to operate a truck, picking up and delivering materials, equipment, supplies, etc., for a state department or institution; and to do related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives specific instructions from a superior who assigns duties and indicates work methods and schedules.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Usually none, but may direct the work of manual laborers or inmate help assigned to assist.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  • To operate, service and maintain medium and heavy trucks or other internal combustion engine equipment used in routine road maintenance or construction operations.
  • To operate a truck for as state department or institution, performing such tasks as transporting food, laundry, equipment, supplies, refuse, etc., and to assist in loading and unloading such a vehicle.
  • To operate a truck performing snow plowing and sanding duties.
  • To be responsible for the proper use and care of assigned motor equipment; to request necessary repairs; to keep equipment clean; to check fuel, oil, grease, water and air.
  • To make emergency minor running repairs to equipment.
  • As required: to operate catch basin cleaner equipment; or to perform manual labor.
  • To do related work as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES: A thorough knowledge of the state laws pertaining to the operation of motor vehicles on the highway; skill in the operation and servicing of motor equipment other than heavy diesel and gasoline motor equipment; the ability to make emergency minor running repairs and adjustments to equipment; the ability to understand readily and carry out simple oral and written directions; and related capacities and abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Education: Such as may have been gained through: completion of eight school grades; and

Experience: Such as may have been gained through: employment as an operator of trucks or other motor equipment, involving the performance of some manual labor.

Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of the proper operator’s license issued in conformance to requirements of the Rhode Island Registry of Motor Vehicles to operate above-described equipment and must maintain such licensure as a condition of employment. At the time of appointment must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician’s certificate.
