Canterbury Court is looking for a Choral Leader to join our family. This position is located in the Resident Services division of our Life Plan Community (LPC).  We invite you to experience Canterbury Court. Â
Requirements
 PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plan and lead weekly choir rehearsals that are engaging, organized, accessible, and appropriate for residents with varying vocal abilities and musical experience.
2. Select appropriate and diverse repertoire, including sacred music, folk songs, American art songs, musical theater, seasonal favorites, classic standards, and other selections that resonate with residents.
3. Use piano and/or keyboard skills to accompany rehearsals and support singers as they learn music.
4. Teach music in a way that builds confidence, supports vocal technique, and strengthens sight-reading or learning-by-ear skills.
5. Adapt music, rehearsal pacing, and instruction as needed to accommodate changing vocal ranges, hearing needs, sight-reading limitations, and physical considerations.
6. Prepare and direct informal programs and scheduled performances, including Spring and Holiday programs and other activities for Independent Living and Monarch residents.
7. Coordinate performance preparation, including additional rehearsals as needed for special programs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A degree in music, music education, choral conducting, music therapy, or a related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred.
2. Experience in choral conducting, vocal instruction, rehearsal preparation, and leading vocal ensembles is required.
3. A minimum of two years’ experience directing amateur, community-based, or non-auditioned choral groups.
4. Piano and/or keyboard skills are required to accompany the chorus during weekly practice sessions.
5. A minimum of one year of experience working with older adults is preferred.
6. Ability to teach and lead older adults with patience, encouragement, clear communication, and sensitivity to varying musical backgrounds and abilities.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Create a warm, welcoming, and patient environment that encourages participation from residents of all skill levels, from lifelong singers to beginners.
2. Motivate and energize singers while fostering the joy of music, group participation, and positive social connection.
3. Incorporate appropriate vocal and physical warm-ups that support respiratory health, posture, and vocal longevity.
4. Work with the Canterbury Choristers Chair and Co-Chair on program planning, music selection, music acquisition, and performance preparation.
5. Coordinate with the Choristers Chair and Co-Chair to formulate and submit an annual budget to the Resident Services Director by July 20 and to the Residents Council Treasurer by December 1.
6. Support basic performance logistics, including scheduling, accessibility considerations, seating, and coordination with Resident Services staff.
