General Description and Classification Standards:
This is a full-time, professional level position within the Geographic Information System function of the Department of Watershed Management, City of Atlanta. GIS Analyst leverages geospatial and GPS resources to collect data, create maps, perform technical research, spatial analysis, and produce graphic reports. The planning and support of simultaneous tasks and GIS projects with a committed approach to teamwork, interpersonal skills, and collaboration is essential for this role. GIS Analysts are both subject matter experts and cross-functional leaders. The candidate should have the technical agility, focus, and flexibility to work independently and in a group environment and may act as departmental liaison with other internal agencies.

Supervision Received:
Receives nominal guidance regarding workflow, projects, and objectives. Assigned tasks are typically executed individually with periodic team collaboration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.

•    Compiles, manipulates, and analyzes geospatial data 
•    Performs, designs, and implements advanced analysis methods 
•    Investigates & interprets survey maps/plats 
•    Produces shapefiles and CAD files for data distribution 
•    Creates digitized GIS maps observing cartographic methods 
•    Responds to general inquiries from peers & interdepartmental staff 
•    Follows established work methods, timetables, performance standards 
•    Completes assigned tasks in an accurate and timely manner 
•    Assists with updates to operating procedures 
•    Follows standards set forth in Data Sharing process 
•    May train users in the implementation of a new system 
•    May present ideas in front of small to medium sized groups 
•    May act as a lead to peers, interns, or consultant staff 
•    May perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

•    Highly skilled in GIS principles, concepts, methodology, and technical skills
•    Extensive experience with ESRI ArcGIS Suite; Pro, Online, & mobile Applications
•    Proficient with shapefiles, geodatabases, feature layers, web maps, instant apps, feature layers, coordinate systems, projections, SDE environment editing, spatial analysis, and cartographic schema
•    Strong analytical skills, quantitative skills, and ability to conceptualize and interpret spatial data
•    Able to think critically, abstractly and resolve most issues without escalation
•    Demonstrates initiative, a cooperative nature, and contributes to team dynamic
•    Innovative, organized and detail oriented when managing multiple priorities
•    Effective verbal and written communication skills
•    Able to lead, train and support less experienced staff
•    Acts with a well-developed professional business acumen
•    Self-motivated with initiative and commitment to learning/growth opportunities. 

Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience - Bachelor’s Degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; and two (2) years of specific GIS work experience.
Licensures and Certifications - None required.
Preferred Requirements - Master’s Degree in GIS, Geography, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field with five (5) years of experience.

Work Environment:
Required physical, lifting, and sensory capabilities are requirements to perform the job successfully. Typical environmental conditions associated with the job.

Lifting Requirements: 
Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

Work Schedule:
This position follows the City’s hybrid work schedule policy as assigned by the Department of Human Resources Commissioner and requires in-person work at City worksites/facilities at least four (4) days per week, with the option to work remotely one (1) day per week, based on eligibility, departmental needs, and supervisor approval. The hybrid work schedule is subject to change at any time to five (5) days in-person work.
