Job Description

Provides surgical services equipment, supplies, and instrumentation in an efficient and effective manner. Manages day-to-day sterile processing activities, including direct management of Sterile Processing Supervisor and working collaboratively with Surgical Inventory to facilitate prompt and effective distribution of supplies, equipment, and instrumentation. Provides oversight to other areas as needed.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in personnel supervision
  • 3 years of experience in fiscal management in a management or coordinator capacity
  • 5 years of experience in a high-volume sterile processing and distribution environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced sterile processing, e.g., Certification in Healthcare Leadership (CHL) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or healthcare materials certification or Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience in an operating room

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent and Associate's degree or graduate of accredited surgical technology program

Certification Summary

  • Advanced sterile processing, e.g., Certification in Healthcare Leadership (CHL) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) within one year of employment

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Job Responsibilities

  • Monitors and manages daily operation and overall performance of Sterile Processing.
  • Oversees department activities and works collaboratively with operating room materials to ensure flow and assist with identifying and solving problems in a timely manner.
  • Directs and coordinate daily activities of Sterile Processing.
  • Makes rounds through departments, identifies opportunities for improvement, and works collaboratively with appropriate personnel to implement identified opportunities.
  • Develops and implements goals and objectives relative to Sterile Processing department operations.
  • Leads continuous assessment and improvement of quality of services provided.
  • Identifies potential risk areas within area of responsibility and for supporting the problem resolution process.
  • Supports and participates in continuous assessment and improvement of quality of services provided throughout Surgical Services.
  • Develops and implements effective procedures to ensure optimal use of equipment and instruments while decreasing overall costs.
  • Coordinates equipment, instruments, and supplies/facilities issues, enhancing satisfaction levels of clinical staff and minimizing service interruptions.
  • Monitors equipment and instrumentation needs/usage based on feedback from physicians, nursing staff, department staff, and automated information systems.
  • Establishes, implements, and monitors effectiveness of policies and procedures for Sterile Processing department.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, organizational standards, and policies and procedures related to area of responsibility.
  • Maintains records of compliance activities and reports compliance activities to compliance office.
  • Serves as resource for Sterile Processing, Infection Control, and Operating Room personnel on sterility issues.
  • Understands and complies with infection control, safety, Joint Commission, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation standards and regulations as relates to sterile processing.
  • Provides and documents monthly educational in-services and staffing meetings.
  • Ensures customer satisfaction in areas of instrumentation, patient equipment, and facilities functionality and implements quality indicators and customer service feedback mechanisms regarding all areas of responsibility.
  • Assists with compilation and oversight of operating and capital budgets for Operating Room, Anesthesia, and Sterile Processing departments.
  • Reports monthly operations statistics to Business Administrator and Surgical Services.
  • Provides feedback relative to business office functions of charging, auditing, and file maintenance, ensuring completion of all activities in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for all aspects of managing and leading a team including: interviewing, hiring, training, developing, directing work and processes, managing performance, recognizing, and rewarding employees.
  • Mentor team members to encourage personal and professional growth.
  • Encourage ongoing skill development by providing opportunities for continued education.
