POSITION SUMMARY
The Lead Laboratory Assistant performs support duties for efficient laboratory operations and provides leadership for co-workers, ensuring compliance with established procedures and ensuring quality standards are met.
 
This position performs collection, handling and preparation of specimens for internal and external laboratory testing, in accordance with standard operating procedures, and in a manner that supports quality patient care. Additionally, this position is responsible for the scheduling of staff, assisting in maintaining par level staffing, assists in customer service recovery, assists in dissemination of information to staff, maintenance of inventory and ordering processes, orientation/training of staff, assisting with in staff assessment and evaluation, facilitates and assists staff in meeting organizational and departmental requirements as established, implemented, or amended; and acts as a resource person to other team members. This position requires effectively managing up issues or situations as appropriate to the leadership team.
 
This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: ASCP Phlebotomy certification or equivalent preferred. Require 12 hours continuing education annually. BLSHCP required effective 1/1/2021, existing incumbents with HSAED will be required to renew with BLSHCP all new hires effective this same date are required to have BLSHCP within 6 months of hire or transfer.
EXPERIENCE: 2 -- 3 years of prior experience in a similar setting required. Knowledge of medical terminology required; working knowledge of laboratory information system utilization must be acquired after three (3) months on the job. Proficiency in Clinical Applications preferred at time of hire; incumbents within position will be trained appropriately and then skill will be required for this position within 30-60 days from date of hire.
 
PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Demonstrates the ability to perform the department specific competencies as listed on the Assessment and Evaluation Tool.

Strict compliance with laboratory Fraud and Abuse policies and requirements is an employment condition.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Potential for exposure to the hazards and risk of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
This position demands increased amounts of standing, bending and manual manipulation, as well as some light-moderate lifting. Must have the ability to distinguish colors.
The department specific Assessment and Evaluation Tool lists the essential functions of this position.
 
Core competencies will be assessed primarily to the following patient population(s) served (with the exception of newborns): All diagnoses/conditions of patients admitted to the hospital.
