Family Life Center, Inc. is seeking a dependable and compassionate Substance Abuse Counselor to provide behavioral health and substance use treatment services to adults and their families. This position works collaboratively with clients, treatment staff, community partners, probation departments, and other authorized agencies to support recovery and successful program participation.

Pay will be based on education, credentials, and relevant experience.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide basic living-skills training, psychoeducational services, medication monitoring, crisis intervention, and other authorized treatment services.
  • Provide case-management services throughout program participation and assist with coordinating continuing care.
  • Consult with clinical and program staff regarding appropriate treatment approaches and client interventions.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with community treatment providers, probation departments, and other authorized agencies.
  • Prepare timely, accurate, and complete client records and billing documentation.
  • Ensure client files comply with Family Life Center policies and applicable Alabama Department of Mental Health, Alabama Medicaid, and contracting-agency requirements.
  • Participate in required training opportunities and staff meetings.
  • Assist with general administrative duties, special projects, and other assignments as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must qualify as a Qualified Substance Abuse Professional III (QSAP III) under applicable Alabama Department of Mental Health and Alabama Medicaid requirements, including:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a nationally or regionally accredited college or university in psychology, social work, community counseling, rehabilitation counseling, pastoral counseling, family therapy, or another behavioral health field with equivalent clinical coursework.
  • Willingness and ability to participate in at least one hour of individual supervision each week with a certified or licensed QSAP I until the required substance abuse counseling credential is obtained.
  • Ability to obtain an approved substance abuse counselor certification within 30 months of hire through a qualifying credentialing organization.
  • If personally in recovery, a minimum of two years of continuous sobriety.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • An unrestricted and unexpired Alabama driver’s license and the ability to meet the company’s vehicle-insurability requirements if the position involves transporting clients.
