The Controls Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining robust production and business processes to ensure optimal equipment functionality, safety, throughput, and quality. This role focuses on enhancing equipment performance and reliability through proactive process improvements, preventive measures, and effective troubleshooting of automation systems. The Controls Specialist will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to support current production needs while driving continuous improvement initiatives for future projects.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement, and sustain stable and capable production processes to maximize equipment functionality, safety, throughput, and quality.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to assembly automation, robotics, workstations, and automated equipment.
  • Diagnose and repair PLC controls, including electrical components, servo drives, motors, wiring, and control panels.
  • Modify and update PLC programs for Siemens, Fanuc, Allen-Bradley (PLC-5, SLC500, ControlLogix), and other automation platforms.
  • Document and maintain accurate records of program changes, prints, and electrical schematics.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts to minimize equipment downtime, improve throughput, and address safety concerns.
  • Establish, maintain, and administer electrical control plans to support operational efficiency and compliance.
  • Actively participate in simultaneous engineering efforts for process improvements and new project launches.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams, skilled trades, and business unit leaders to support production and continuous improvement initiatives
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 3 years of manufacturing experience in an automotive assembly and/or machining environment
  • Proven programming experience with Fanuc and Allen-Bradley PLC platforms (PLC-5, SLC500, ControlLogix)
  • Strong troubleshooting skills with hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work flexible schedules, including various shifts and overtime, to support production needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field (advanced coursework preferred)
  • Experience programming Siemens PLCs
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and adept at problem-solving in fast-paced environments
  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with employees at all levels, from hourly staff to senior leadership
