OVERVIEW:

The Maine Bureau of the Budget is seeking a skilled financial analyst to support statewide fiscal planning and policy analysis. As a Budget Analyst, you will play a key role in analyzing budgets, forecasting financial trends, and supporting data-driven decision-making for assigned policy areas and state agencies. This position offers the opportunity to work on complex financial and policy issues that directly impact the State of Maine’s strategic priorities and long-term fiscal planning.

This position is based in Augusta. On-site work is required during the initial training and onboarding period. Following demonstrated successful performance and progression in the role, a hybrid schedule with limited remote work may be authorized.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Conducting budget analysis, financial forecasting, and fiscal modeling

  • Evaluating program funding requests and analyzing financial impacts

  • Researching revenue and expenditure trends to support strategic planning

  • Preparing budget recommendations and reports for leadership

  • Collaborating with agencies to develop budget proposals and identify financial solutions

  • Performing special studies and analyses related to state programs, funding structures, and emerging fiscal issues

This role is well suited for a candidate who enjoys analytical problem-solving, interpreting financial data, and translating complex information into actionable recommendations. The successful candidate will be adaptable, intellectually curious, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.

The Budget Analyst is also expected to:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Economics, or a related field, and four (4) years of professional experience in budgeting, finance, economics, or business administration.
  • Equivalent related experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis. A master’s degree in the fields listed above may substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience.

Preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Experience using State accounting and budgeting systems.
