The Maine Municipal Association is seeking an experienced Underwriter to support our Risk Management Services programs. This role is responsible for underwriting new and renewal business, evaluating risk, determining coverage and pricing, and building strong relationships with municipal members and partners.

In This Role, You Will:

  • Underwrite submissions within authority as delegated in the most currently dated Letter of Authority for assigned Risk Management Programs and documenting underwriting decisions.
  • Determine coverage, terms, conditions, and pricing for new business accounts in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Coordinate and review Loss Control services for members, review Loss Control reports, document analysis and take appropriate underwriting action as needed.
  • Meet with municipal officials to discuss MMA Risk Management programs and services and assist in presenting proposals.
  • Maintain a current awareness of commercial insurance trends and topics.
  • Support Member Services Staff in prospecting, data collection and with the MMA Annual Convention.
  • Assist with underwriting projects, including procedure updates, rate reviews, and updates to applications.
  • Help members obtain insurance solutions outside of RMS programs through broker partnerships when needed.
  • Stay current on commercial insurance trends, emerging risks, and industry developments.

What You Bring:

  • Strong knowledge of all Risk Management Services Programs.
  • Understanding of underwriting and related activities with emphasis on Workers’ Compensation, Property, General Liability, Inland Marine, Automobile, Police Professional, Public Officials Liability, Crime, and Medical Malpractice. 
  • Understanding of risk management, loss control principles, insurance coverages, claims, and related legal issues. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively present information and build relationships with members, consultants, brokers, service providers, and colleagues.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, databases, and underwriting systems.

Desired Experience and Training:

  • 3–5 years of multi-line insurance experience with a focus on underwriting, pricing and risk selection activities.
  • Professional designations or demonstrated initiative in working towards attainment of professional designations or related business training; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
