Job Summary:

MaineGeneral is seeking an experienced and compassionate RN Charge Nurse to join our team on 3 South, our inpatient behavioral health unit at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. This state-of-the-art unit was designed in collaboration with staff and patients, fostering a safe, innovative, and supportive environment for both patients and care teams. The Charge Nurse provides frontline clinical leadership, ensuring high-quality patient care while supporting staff and unit operations.

Job Description:

Position: RN Charge Nurse
Location: Alfond Center for Health, Augusta
Schedule: Full-time (36 hours/week)
Shift: Nights (7p–7a)

What You’ll Do:

  • Supervises and mentors nursing and support staff during assigned shift. Determines staffing level and assignments based on staff availability, staff abilities, census, and patient acuity in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Provides direct patient care as needed. Floats between staff to assist with problem-solving. May take patient assignments to meet staffing needs.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of patient care and identifies any issues that affect desired patient outcomes. Responds to complaints about patient care and related services, and manages through established channels. Collaborates patient care as needed, across the organization.
  • Performs responsibilities of underlying role, including entering orders, performing admissions or discharges, and coordinating transfers. Ensures staff has necessary equipment and supplies to provide safe and effective patient care.

Your Qualifications:

  • Active Maine RN license (or ability to obtain promptly) – required
  • Minimum of 3 years of acute care RN experience, preferably in inpatient behavioral health – required
  • Prior charge nurse or leadership experience – preferred
  • Strong leadership, communication, and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and make sound clinical decisions in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
