Position Description:

The Instructional Designer IV for Resident Physician-Scientist Development (RPSD) in the Health Science Campus Office of Research will lead and support the design, implementation, and evaluation of a pilot Resident Physician-Scientist Development Program at the University of Louisville. This pilot is intended to serve as the precursor and foundation for an NIH R38 program.

This position will:

  • Launch and manage the pilot program as soon as hired.

  • Support recruitment and onboarding of residents beginning July 2026.

  • Coordinate tracking and analysis of outcomes to inform and strengthen the R38 grant submission planned for October 2026.

  • Continue to support the program after successful R38 funding, ensuring continuity of curriculum, evaluation, and communication.

The Instructional Designer IV will oversee instructional design and curriculum development to build core competencies in clinical and translational research for residents pursuing careers as physician-scientists.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program and Curriculum Design

  • Develop the educational platform and curricula for the Resident Physician-Scientist Development (RPSD) pilot and subsequent R38 program.

  • Design competency-based learning experiences (seminars, workshops, asynchronous modules, and short courses) to build clinical and translational research skills in residents.

  • Align RPSD program goals, competencies, and activities with other UofL initiatives to develop physician-scientists.

Pilot Program Launch, Data Capture, and R38 Support

  • Launch and operationalize the pilot program upon hire, with active resident participation beginning July 2026.

  • Coordinate with IT and data specialists to develop systems to track participation, outcomes, and milestones for the pilot and future R38 program.

  • Collect, organize, and summarize program data and outcomes to support the R38 application in October 2026.

  • Assist in developing the R38 grant application and, if funded, provide ongoing administrative and curricular support.

Instructional Design and Educational Quality

  • Develop face-to-face, online, and asynchronous programming that teaches residents research-based strategies to improve their research design, analysis, and scholarly output.

  • Incorporate adult learning principles and evidence-based educational practices into all curricula.

  • Regularly review and synthesize literature on best practices in research training and physician-scientist development, updating program content as needed.

Program Coordination and Communication

  • Manage and coordinate all RPSD training initiatives and activities across departments.

  • Meet quarterly with the curriculum advisory committee to review progress, update curricula, and refine program components.

  • Lead the core communications strategy for the RPSD program (e.g., web content, newsletters, announcements, and promotional materials).

Evaluation, Assessment, and Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and administer surveys and other assessment tools to identify institution-wide knowledge gaps and training needs related to resident physician-scientist development.

  • Work with the Professional Development (PD) Cores of the Louisville clinical and translational research center (LCTRC) and other partners to enhance evaluation strategies and harmonize offerings.

  • Help evaluate program success using established metrics and best practices, and prepare reports for internal stakeholders and sponsors.

Resident Engagement and Scholarly Activities

  • Help plan and organize resident participation in the annual Research Louisville festival and related scholarly events.

  • Support organization and coordination of resident participation in grant-writing cohorts (e.g., K-award cohort programs and similar initiatives).

  • Assist in creating clear learning pathways for residents with varying prior research experience.

Other Responsibilities

  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support the professional and educational mission of the Office of Physician-Scientist Development.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Technology, or Doctoral degree (e.g., EdD, PhD) in a relevant field.

  • At least 3 years of experience in instructional design and curriculum development in higher education, health professions education, or a similar setting.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering blended and/or online learning (e.g., LMS-based modules, webinars, asynchronous courses).

  • Experience with assessment and program evaluation, including survey design, data collection, and basic data analysis.

  • Prior experience in clinical, translational, or biomedical research environments or in supporting research training programs.

  • Familiarity with physician-scientist career pathways, NIH training mechanisms (e.g., T, K, or R mechanisms), or similar research training structures.

  • Experience collaborating with IT/data teams to build dashboards, track outcomes, or manage educational data.

  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize educational and research best practices and translate them into practical curricula and resources.

  • Experience contributing to or supporting grant applications, particularly training or career development grants.

  • Experience with Articulate/Rise (or similar) for asynchronous program development

Target Compensation Maximum:

$100,553.00

Target Compensation Minimum:

$67,035.00

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
