The hiring range for this position is $74,438 - $93,047/annually

OVERVIEW OFÂ JOBÂ
The Accountant Senior performs a variety of complex governmental accounting functions associated with the analysis, maintenance, and audit of assigned funds and accounts for the Controller’s Office in the Finance Department.  The Controller's Office is responsible for accounting and financial reporting, vendor and employee payments, grant management assistance, and internal financial controls. PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESÂ Â
Assists in the preparation of the City's annual comprehensive financial report used by all levels of management, bond rating agencies, investors, and citizensÂ
Assists with the preparation for the external audit and coordinates with external auditors to respond to audit requests and questionsÂ
Prepares work papers, statements, and schedules for external audit and reviews those prepared by other accountants and City staffÂ
Reconciles and analyzes fund and account activityÂ
Prepares and analyzes reports and projections for management reviewÂ
Balances and maintains general ledger accounts and fundsÂ
Identifies, researches, and resolves problems, develops controls and provides recommendations to improve accounting processesÂ
Prepares financial statements for assigned fundsÂ
Identifies, researches and resolves accounting related concerns and issues independently or as part of a team, assists in developing controls and providing recommendations to improve accounting processesÂ
Coordinates, prepares and completes special projects and reports either independently or as a member of a special project teamÂ
Provides training and guidance to City staff on accounting and accounting system mattersÂ
Develops work goals and objectives including prioritization of workload Â
Interprets and implement authoritative pronouncementsÂ
Develops and completes accounting system's software update testing, communicates and resolves issues, and monitors testing status of othersÂ
Assists in on-going systems development including utilization of data through reporting tools and periodic software update testing and/or implementation of the City's ERP system as well as auxiliary systems that support the ERP systemÂ
May perform additional duties as assignedÂ

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, business administration, finance, or directly related field with a major in accountingÂ

Experience:Â Â Â
Five (5) years accounting experience in a large organization

Active status as Colorado Certified Public Accountant preferred but not required (reciprocity will be considered if state of active license is commensurate with Colorado license requirements)Â
Governmental accounting and/or auditing experienceÂ
Knowledge:Â
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, practices, and requirements of accounting, governmental accounting standards, auditing practices, and computer-based accounting systemsÂ

The city of Aurora will implement furlough days (unpaid days off) for most employees in 2026. The scheduled furlough dates are January 16, April 10, July 2, and December 24.
