Brief Job Description:

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is looking for a communications project manager with strong writing, editing and people skills to work on the Business Support Communications Team for the Deputy Chief Financial Officer. The team focuses on internal communications for the Finance Division, including writing, editing, SharePoint administration and page design. Projects include a monthly newsletter, GovDelivery emails to all agency staff and executive communication.

 

We’re looking for someone who can cut through government-speak and teach others to do it too. If you want to do things a little differently, here’s your chance.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs):

  • Write and edit content for newsletter articles, staff emails, PowerPoint presentations and SharePoint content (30%)
  • Distribute GovDelivery emails and produce SharePoint content using existing templates and guides (30%)
  • Edit legislative and other reports and documents for accessibility and plain language (15%)
  • Design SharePoint content, documents, brochures, graphics (10%)
  • Create and maintain processes and procedures for communications project (10%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of:

  • Basic writing, editing (Associated Press style, plain language, internal newsletter).
  • Page design concepts (flyers/brochures or other print publications, website, PowerPoint or SharePoint).

Skill in:

  • Writing and editing newsletter articles and content for digital publications.
  • Writing and editing staff emails and instructions.
  • Using Microsoft Word, Teams, and related software. 

Ability to:

  • Strictly follow review processes designed to reduce errors and misinformation.
  • Strictly follow professional standards in daily email and Teams communications within team and to a broader internal audience.
  • Participate in virtual meetings, effectively communicate with team members and complete assignments while working in a hybrid in-office/work-from-home environment.

Initial Screening Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or related field preferred. Can substitute four years of professional experience in media or public relations, print or digital editorial work, communications or writing press releases.
  • Four years’ experience writing and editing.
  • Four years’ experience in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Four years' experience with plain language and AP style preferred.

This position is required to work in-office two days a week at the North Austin Complex.
