Position Description:

The Senior Manager, Accounting Operations directs the Bank's accounting operations and related reporting support functions, including information technology accounting, District accounting practice support, cost billing, and accounting financial systems implementation and management. This role provides leadership for the Bank's accounting operations teams and is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of accounting processes that support the Bank and District associations.

Working as part of the Finance Division, the Senior Manager, Accounting Operations collaborates closely with Accounting, Information Technology, Internal Audit, external auditors, Business Operations, and Association personnel to support effective financial operations, financial systems management, regulatory compliance, and reporting excellence. The role serves as a key liaison between Finance and technology stakeholders to ensure accounting systems and processes effectively support business requirements and strategic objectives.

The position focuses on maintaining strong internal controls, supporting compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements, overseeing financial reporting activities, and driving continuous process improvement across accounting operations. The Senior Manager, Accounting Operations leverages extensive accounting expertise and leadership experience to guide operational initiatives, improve efficiencies, support staff development, and ensure the Bank's accounting functions operate effectively and consistently.

Operating with a high degree of ownership and accountability, the Senior Manager, Accounting Operations identifies opportunities to strengthen processes and controls, resolves complex accounting and operational issues, manages critical stakeholder relationships, and helps ensure the Bank maintains high standards of financial integrity, reporting accuracy, and operational excellence.

Day-to-Day Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct the day-to-day operations of the Bank's accounting operations groups, including general ledger, accounts payable, and fixed assets activities.
  • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual general ledger close processes for the Bank, including completion of monthly fluctuation analysis and other reports as requested.
  • Analyze emerging accounting principles and regulatory standards to ensure compliance and coordinate the evaluation of their impact on the District's financial application systems.
  • Ensure processes and documentation for the use of Concur Expense and Concur Invoice systems are current, aligned with best practices, and effectively support both the Bank and District associations.
  • Prepare and distribute written communications to Associations regarding accounting issues, procedural changes, and related operational matters.
  • Participate in departmental planning and goal-setting activities to support accounting operations priorities and broader organizational objectives.
  • Prepare and deliver oral and written presentations to internal and external audiences on accounting operations, reporting matters, and related business issues.
  • Serve as a liaison with the Information Technology Department for financial product development, including assisting with issue resolution and prioritization of enhancements to financial software.
  • Serve as a key liaison with Associations regarding general ledger systems, account structures, branches, and other information necessary to support daily functions and month-end close activities.
  • Lead staffing support for areas of direct responsibility, including hiring support, work assignment management, employee coaching, performance evaluations, and ongoing staff development.
  • Ensure adequate documentation and controls are maintained to meet the Bank's Sarbanes-Oxley objectives, internal control standards, and internal controls over financial reporting requirements.
  • Perform project work and other assignments as directed.

What You Bring to the Team:

This role requires a combination of accounting expertise, financial reporting knowledge, systems and process management experience, leadership capability, and strong communication skills, including:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • Ten (10) to fifteen-plus (15+) years of experience in fiscal operations, financial analysis, accounting, and financial reporting.
  • Five-plus (5+) years of leadership experience overseeing teams, functions, programs, or enterprise-level initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve progressively more complex accounting and operational issues while effectively managing staff resources.
  • Strong knowledge of accounting, financial analysis, business management, and decision-making principles.
  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and their application to accounting matters.
  • Knowledge of corporate income tax.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and independent work skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with executive leadership, auditors, regulators, and Association personnel.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy, professionalism, and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively across functional areas.
  • Commitment to operational excellence, employee development, and continuous improvement.

Preferred:

  • Supervisory experience leading accounting or finance teams.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
  • Farm Credit System experience.
  • Financial services, banking, or regulated industry experience.
  • Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting financial systems implementations, enhancements, or governance processes.
  • Experience with Concur Expense and Concur Invoice platforms.
  • Experience with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance and internal controls over financial reporting.

Management Responsibilities

This role is responsible for sustained direct supervision of one or more regular employees. The role has ongoing accountability for formal people leadership, including performance management, coaching, employee development, work direction, prioritization, engagement, and accountability for team results. Responsibilities may include hiring, onboarding, workforce planning, retention, performance feedback, corrective action support, and resource planning. The role also supports collaboration, inclusion, continuous improvement, and organizational change within its assigned function or team.
