System Architect Electronic Product Development

The Impact You’ll Make in this Role
As a Product Development Engineer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:
Lead the design and development of next-generation electronic locating & marking system architectures for buried asset applications.Â
Lead the design and development of next-generation field deployed sensor and automation hardware system architectures.
Design analog, digital and mixed-signal circuits, including sensor signal conditioning and data-acquisition front ends.
Design power electronics and power-distribution circuits, including motor-drive, DC-DC and protection circuitry.
Integrate embedded processors/microcontrollers, connectivity and industrial I/O (e.g., EtherCAT) into board-level designs.
Select and specify electronic components, balance performance, cost, availability, and manufacturability.
Design for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC/EMI), signal integrity and power integrity, and support regulatory compliance (CE, UL, FCC).
Interact with regulatory teams to ensure compliance with applicable standards.
Collaborate closely with firmware, software, mechanical and systems engineers, and with manufacturing, suppliers, contract manufacturers and PCB fabricators, to scale designs into production.
Drive product architecture, feasibility studies, prototyping, and engineering verification activities.
Generate intellectual property positions, including invention submissions, patents and 3M trade secrets.
Communicate tests and other program results to internal and external stakeholders.
Drive the development and commercialization of products to efficiently, reliably and sustainably deliver energy to customers around the world.
Your Skills and Expertise Â
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science completed and verified prior to start from an accredited institution.
5 years of experience in developing electronic hardware product architectures.
7 years of experience designing electronic hardware from concept through prototype and production.
7 years of experience with analog, digital, and/or power circuit design.
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
Master's degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering or related discipline and from an accredited institution.
5 years of experience with RF and HF circuit design
5 years of experience with power electronics, motor-drive or servo-drive circuit design.
5 years of experience with mixed-signal design, sensor interfaces, and signal conditioning.
5 years of experience with high-speed digital design, signal integrity, and power integrity.
5 years of experience designing for EMC/EMI compliance and regulatory certification (CE, UL, FCC).
5 years of experience integrating embedded microcontrollers/processors and industrial fieldbus I/O (e.g., EtherCAT).
5 years of experience with machine-vision camera, lighting or imaging-sensor electrical integration.
5 years of experience with robotics, industrial automation equipment, or autonomous systems.
Familiarity with Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Test (DFT) and Design for Reliability (DfR), and working with contract manufacturers and PCB fabricators.
Work location: This role follows an on-site working model, requiring the employee to work at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Austin, TX.
Travel: May include up to 15% domestic or international
Relocation: May be authorized
